Obituary- Franklin Shaffer, son of Jacob and Jane Shaffer, was born in Johnstown PA., June 16, 1844 and died May 6, 1926, at the age of 81 years, 10 months and 20 days.On October 17, 1871, he was married to Jeanie Gutches, at Parkersburg, IA. She died December 11, 1894. Seven children were born to this union; Birdie, Elmer, Mary, Edward, Ethel, John and Charles, all of whom survive their father excepting Mrs. Birdie Gould, who died May 21, 1916. He enlisted in the Union Army on August 5, 1862, serving three years in Co. C 32 Infantry of Iowa. He participated in 17 victorious battles being wounded twice. He lost four brothers in the Civil War.He was promoted seven times; was never in the guard house nor arrested. He was honorably discharged in August 1865. He removed from Butler County, Iowa to Harlan County in March, 1872. He laid out the town of Alma and was prominent in its civic affairs until declining years preventing his participation. He was married to Alice Eldora Butler on Nov. 20, 1898. to this union three children were born; Jennie, Butler and Marvin. In 1894 he united with the Congregational Church in Alma and remaining a faithful member, serving in various official capacities. Frank Shaffer was one of Alma's earliest settler and during his life time was at all times loyal to his home, his town, county and state. He was active in the early development of Alma, and until recent years devoted a great deal of his time to things beneficial for the city. Burial was made in the Alma cemetery. The bodies of the father and mother were ushered to their last resting place by two beautiful grey hearses followed by ninety relatives and scores of friends. Provided by contributor G.P.
