The boarding house conducted by William Stiff was burned to the ground, and a five weeks old child of Mr. and Mrs. Stiff lost its life. Night Operator Stowe was sleeping in the house and narrowly escaped with his life. He is badly burned about the head, back and hands and was brought up on No. 3 and taken to St. Luke's. The postoffice "Ives" was conducted in the same building but Postmaster Charles of this city has not been notified as to whether there was any loss to the mails. How the fire originated and the extent of the loss have not been learned. A later report says that Mr. Stowe was burned while trying to rescue the child from the fire. Contributor: CJeanealogy
