Col 3 & 4 It is with sorrow that we record the death of James William Stiff, who passed away August 22, after having reached the 61st milestone the 18th of last April. He was one of twelve children born to John C. and Margaret Stiff, of Mead Co., Kentucky. The mother died five years ago, but the aged father still lives and was present at the funeral services. Four boys and three girls still survive of this large family, one son Frank passed away at Davenport just three weeks ago. The names of the others still living are R.E. of Idaho, Henry and Richard of Illinois, Otto and Mrs. Ada Finefield of Davenport; Mrs. Anna Sheldon of Wichita, Kas,; and Mrs. Kadie Christian of Tipton, Iowa. When 11 years old James moved to Johnson county, Ia., with his parents and lived for many years near Morse. He was married to Emma Borschel of Morse, May 18, 1889, and to this union were born eight children, two boys dying while very young. The following children mourn the passing of a kind and affectionate father: Mrs. Nina Anderson, Glenn Haven, Wis.; Mrs. Clara Linn, Rochester, Ia;, Irene, at home; Mrs. Dorothy Long, Glenn Haven Wis., A.C. and Elvin both of Rochester. There are also 8 grandchildren who will mourn the loss of our brother. Nearly two years ago Mr. Stiff became ill, and after failing to recover strength it was found that he was suffering from the disease of cancer which attacked his throat.He was patient in suffering and only took to his bed five weeks ago, passing away quietly after a long illness and suffering intensely at times. For twenty years he has been a member of the Woodman Lodge, Cedar Camp No. 8400 and at the time of his death was clerk of the lodge. His death will be greatly felt among his loved ones, and in the large circle of friends and acquaintances which he possessed. Our sympathies are with the wife and chldren, the aged father, and the other members of his family, and our prayers for comfort are on their behalf. Funeral services were held at the Rochester, conducted by Rev. H.D. Green of West Branch, assisted by M. L. Hill of Bennett. Burial was made at Morse cemetery.
