Schreuder, 78, surrounded by her family, passed away at Billings Deaconess Clinic, Sunday, March 17, 2002. Born Alice Elaine Whitney, May 4, 1923, to Carl and Helen Whitney at Melstone, Alice lived in the Sumatra area and graduated valedictorian of the class of 1941. She was active in athletics in high school, playing basketball. Alice loved this area of Montana and returned to the sand rocks and sagebrush every chance she got. In November of 1942, Alice married Jack Welch in Hysham. While living in Hysham, James and Judy were born. Alice ran the Midway Cafe in Hysham for years, working also at the local grocery store. After leaving Hysham, Alice worked at several jobs and retired from Deluxe Check Printers after many years of service. She met Everett Schreuder and they were married in Cody, Wyo., and together, they spent 32 years. They loved fishing, gardening and dancing, and were members of the Big Sky Polka Club. Alice was also a past member of W.I.F.E. and the Bethlehem Congregational Church. Alice was the loving anchor and spiritual leader for her family and friends. She made sure everyone knew how much she cared, nurturing with hugs, good advice and love. She was a great listener and always put others' needs first. She loved potlucks and social gathering and her sparkling personality made her fun to be around. She loved cooking and was always finding new recipes to try out on her family and friends. Survivors include her husband, Everett; children, James (Vicky) Welch of Hysham and Judy (Larry) Van Luchene of Worden; stepdaughter, Judy Rhodes of Cody; brothers, James (Barbara) Whitney of Hysham, Dennis (Patt) Whitney of Wibaux; grandchildren, Crystal (Harold) Zent, Jason Welch, all of Hysham, Ronda (Terry) Vukasin of Billings, John (Wendy) Nelson of Ballantine; step-granddaughter, Beverley Round of Lame Deer; 10 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Her parents; brother, Ronald Whitney; stepson Bob Schreuder; and step-grandson Wayne Schreuder all preceded her in death. Funeral services for Alice will be 2 p.m. Thursday, March 21, at the Bethlehem Congregational Church in Worden, with interment in Huntley Public Cemetery.
