Whitney, longtime Laurel resident, later of Hysham, passed away on March 30, 2013, at 87 years of age. He was born on May 28, 1925, in Billings, the second child of Carl and Helen Whitney. Jim's grandparents homesteaded south of Sumatra, and he spent his early years there on the family's dryland farm. He started school in Sumatra, but the family later moved, and he graduated from Joliet High before joining the army and serving in World War II. During the war Jim was an advance scout for 'C' Company of the 75th Infantry Division in France and Germany. At war's end he returned to Laurel where he met and married his lifelong spouse, Barbee Anderson, on Jan. 12, 1949. Jim worked at the Cenex Refinery while he and Barbee spent the next 30 years in Laurel raising their family, bowling during the winter leagues and always fitting in a memorable summer vacation in Montana's great outdoors. Once retired from the refinery and with the kids grown or off to college, Jim and Barb moved to their farm near Hysham. Assisted by his father Carl and occasionally his two sons, Jim raised beef cattle and farmed for many years. Then in 2005, with fading health, Jim and Barb moved to Billings, residing in Westpark Village for their final years together. Barbee passed away in 2007. He is survived by his brother, Dennis Whitney; his four children, June Luptak (Dave Bauer), Gary (Kari) Whitney, Joyce (Steve) Fiechtner, Rich (Debbie) Whitney. He is also survived by grandchildren, Brian, Derek, Carlyn, Anna, Kelli, Kara, Ryan, Wylson, Dylan, Maysee; and two great-grandchildren, Malley and Brayden. Jim's ambition and love of the outdoors kept him always on the move until old age slowed his steps. He was first and foremost a family man and he loved any excuse for a family get-together. Always ready with a good story — we had many a good laugh with him. And we won't run out of great memories. A service celebrating his life will be held Friday, April 5, at 11 a.m. in Billings at the Central Christian Church, 1221 16th St. W. Interment will be in Laurel at 1:30 p.m., at the Yellowstone County Veterans Cemetery. Laurel, MT. with full Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the Special K Ranch or the Big Sky Honor Flight.
