Big Timber Pioneer, November 5, 1993 Elizabeth Elgas passed away Monday, November 1, at her home near Big Timber of natural causes. She was born in Ballatine, Montana on December 23, 1919, the daughter of Walter and Helen Fenlon. Both she and her husband Bob graduated from Huntley Project High School. They were in the same class and Bob escorted her to the Senior Prom, where she was prom queen. They were married in Billings on June 17, 1939. Shortly thereafter, they purchased the old Henry McKinsey ranch on the East Boulder where they lived until moving to their ranch home on the lower Boulder near Big Timber where they raised cattle for many years. The ranch was better known as "the bird farm" -for there they maintained and bred birds of many descriptions. It was perhaps best known for its representation of wild geese, swans and cranes. People came from all parts of the world to visit and enjoy. More recently they became involved with breeding macaws, the big long-tailed, brightly colored parrots of South and Central America. Elizabeth was employed at Sweet Grass Abstract and Adit Co., the Sawyers Store, and Cole Drug, but is best known for the many years she was with Citizens Bank and Trust Co. She especially enjoyed her home and doing crossword puzzles, but her special joy was gardening. Her gardens were the envy of all who saw them. Bob fondly referred to her as "Mrs. Greenthumb". She is survived by her husband, Bob; a son, Jim, both of Big Timber; a granddaughter, Susan Elgas of Highland, California; and a sister, Mary Glass of Denver, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Mary Margaret (Peggy); and two sisters. Funeral services were held on Thursday from the Lowry Funeral Home with Sister Catherine Kinsella of St. Jospeph's Catholic Church officiating. Interment followed in Mountain View Cemetery with Jim Colpo, Tom Ivey John Morrison, Jack Hines, Jim Felton, and Owen Moore acting as casket bearers. Contributor: Julia Kinsey (48922386)
