Cleveland Nelson, died in a Salisbury hospital Saturday of last week, where she had been a patient for some months. She was 96 years of age. ALICE NELSON DIED SATURDAY Mrs. Alice Nelson, one of the most highly respected elderly matrons of this community, widow of the late L. Cleveland Nelson, died in a Salisbury hospital Saturday of last week, where she had been a patient for some months. She was 96 years of age. She was the daughter of the late William and Jane Sterling Lawson of the Asbury section. Mrs. Nelson was a remarkable woman in many ways. Year by year her age increased, but she never grew old. Up to the time disease rendered her about helpless she enjoyed the company of young people and liked to take part in their activities. She was active for most of her 96 years, with a personality that caused people to like and respect her greatly, had a keen sense of humor, was witty, and her friendship was valued highly by all who knew her. Her husband, who died in 1920, was a political leader of prominence, and valued her advice on political and civic matters highly. Her counsel was much sought for, and for the most part, wisely followed. Her place in the community will be hard to fill. Funeral services were held on Monday in the Bradshaw Funeral Home here, conducted by the Rev. Daniel Higgins, pastor of Mt. Pleasant-Mariners Methodist Church. Burial was in Asbury Cemetery. Bearers were Arlie Nelson, Raydie James Sterling, Kenneth Tawes, William Hurley, Owen Tyler and Donald Ward. Surviving her are a daughter, Mrs. C. H. (Jane) Hartman of Newport News, Va., two sons, Morrison M. (Kay) Nelson and Paul (Pedro) Nelson, five grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild.
