It is with deep sadness that sons, Glenn (Karen) of Campbellford, Ont. and Bruce (Trudy) of Pickering, Ont. announce the passing of their dear mother on February 1, 2018. Alice was a daughter of Thomas Harvey Swales (of Peggy's Cove) and Melinda Swales (Kaizer) (of Port Bickerton). She will be greatly missed by her four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Alice was a daughter of Thomas Harvey Swales (of Peggy's Cove) and Melinda Swales (Kaizer) (of Port Bickerton). She will be greatly missed by her four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Morris in 2006; her sister, Anne (Cruickshank) and brothers, Harold, Reginald, Bill and Bruce. She was for many years employed by the Eastern Canada Savings and Loan Co. as head of their debenture department. She acquired her certification course as a professional secretary from the National Secretaries Association given at Mount Saint Vincent University and in 1966 she was employed by Dalhousie University as Executive Secretary to the President, former Premier of Nova Scotia, Senator Henry Hicks, with whom she was associated until his death in 1990. Alice loved sports and in her younger years was a keen competitor at badminton, tennis and later, golf. She and Morris enjoyed square dancing from 1975 to 2000 and travelled around the world sharing this with people of many nations. A keen card game player, Alice loved to play duplicate bridge and for many years honed her skills at local clubs and in Florida. She shared her knowledge with her friends and helped them with their difficulties with her 'learning sessions'. Since she was a young girl she had collected stamps which later became a long association with the Nova Scotia Stamp Club. She developed a specialized collection of Queen Elizabeth II stamps with errors that won her several medals. A baseball fan from the 1940s onward she turned her devotion to the Toronto Blue Jays on their inauguration and has never missed a game on TV. She endured the ups and downs over the years but still looked forward every year to Spring Training and the hope that this would be the year that the Jays would win the World Series again. Alice was a member of the National Secretaries Association of Canada, the Waegwoltic Tennis Club, the United Memorial Church, the YMCA Family Club, and was the Regent of the Earl of Athlone Chapter, IODE.
