He was buried the following day. ----- On April 8, 1930, Alice Self Hopper, age 58, widowed, owned a home valued at $3000 on Park Avenue in Leaksville. She was self-employed as a Department Store Merchant. She was living in her home on Park Ave. in Spray when she was admitted to the Tri-City Hospital in Leaksville dying from cancer at 11 p.m. on January 30, 1957. She was 85 years old. The occupation on her death certificate indicated that she had worked as a Retail clothing Merchant. Mrs. Mae Aaron of Spray, NC was the informant on her death record. She was buried on January 1, 1958. ----- Greensboro Record (NC) Friday, February 1, 1957 MRS. ALICE HOPPER Leaksville, Feb. 1 - Mrs. Alice Self Hopper, 85, of Spray, one of Tri-City's pioneer business women, died Wednesday at Tri-City Hospital. She had been a patient two weeks and in declining health about two years. She was a native of Henry County, Virginia, and the widow of James S. Hopper. She attended school in Martinsville, Va., and taught in the Henry County schools for seven years. In 1905 she and her husband came to Spray and opened a small store next to their home. After his death in 1922 she established one of Leaksville's leading drygoods stores and in more recent years had confined her mercantile activities to her store in Spray. Mrs. Hopper was a member of the Spray Methodist church. In 1949 she was chosen Mother of the Year for the Tri-cities. Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Homer Wright, Sr. of Leaksville, and Mrs. B.F. Lee, Mrs. Virginia Gillespie, Mrs. Mae Aaron and Mrs. Allen Hancock, all of Spray; one son, William W. Hopper of Leaksville; three sisters, Mrs. W.L. Johnson of Richmond, Val, Mrs. Cabel Davis, Reidsville and Mrs. J.P. Jones of Spray; two brothers, Tom Self of Henry County, Virginia and L.L. Self, Louisa, Va.; 15 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. Funeral service was held at 2 p.m. today at the Spray Methodist Church by Revs. O. Dewey Smith, T.R. Wolfe, H.W. Peters and Warwick Aiken. Burial was in Overlook Cemetery."
