Description	:	Alida Jacoba Hendrika Kroese was born in February 1861 in the small city of Elburg, located in the northern center of the Netherlands, only child of Jannes Kroese (29 years old, oil miller [olieslager]) and Aaltje van Triest (29 too). Alida's mother died three days after her birth and her father, cattle keeper (veehouder) Jannes Kroese remarried in May 1862 in Elburg at the age of 30 years the nine years younger Gerritje Dul, daughter of cattle keeper Hendrik Dul and Jannetje Ponstein. Alida's father Jannes Kroese was in all those birth years farmer / cattle keeper. In 1881 the family Kroese arrived after three weeks in steerage at the port of New York, Castle Garden. They left Netherlands because her father didn’t want the boys would be conscripted in the Dutch Army and probably for economic reasons. They went to the Dutch settlement of Holland, located in southeastern Nebraska, Lancaster County. During one year Alida worked for a farmer wife near Lincoln, Lancaster County, for $1.25 a week. Then she worked in Lincoln for $3 week as a maid. On April 1, 1883 Elida Kroese married in the unincorporated Dutch community of Holland, Lancaster County, Nebraska, at the age of 22 years the four years older Geert Van Engen, also born in the Netherlands. In June 1885 she lived with Ganet VanEngen in the Panama Precinct area, on a farm in the former Dutch settlement of Pella, Lancaster County, located in the southeastern part of Nebraska. Then they moved in 1893 for 18 years to the very small city of Prairie View, located in the extreme northern part of Kansas, at the border with Nebraska. In June 1900 Alida J H (39 years old, born in February 1861 in Holland, immigrated in 1879, mother of 7 living and 2 deceased children), her husband Geert Van Engen (43, born in April 1857 in Holland, immigrated in 1867, farmer), their children Geert (16, September 1885, Nebraska, farm laborer), John (14, May 1886, Nebraska, farm laborer), Evert (12, September 1888, Nebraska, farm laborer), Albert (10, October 1889, Nebraska, farm laborer), Edrew (8, October 1891, Nebraska), Alida G (5, January 1895, Kansas) and Author (2, April 1898, Kansas) were living on their own farm at Prairie View in Dayton Township, Phillips County, located in the extreme northern part of Kansas, at the border with Nebraska. In April 1910 Lydia J H (49), her husband G Van Engen (53, farmer), their children John (23, farm laborer), Evert (21, farm laborer), Albert (19, farm laborer at home farm), Edward (17, farm laborer at home farm), Lyda (14), Arthur (12), Gertie (10, Kansas) and Henry (4, Kansas) were still living on their own farm in Prairie View, Dayton Township, Phillips County, Kansas. Prairie View had in 1910 191 people, in 2010 134. In January 1920 Alida J H (59), her husband Gerrit Van Engen (62, grain and stock farmer), their children Alida G (22), Art (22, farm laborer at home farm), Gertie (19), Henry (14), Gerrit (13), Elevarett (11), Myrtle (8) and Edward (27, day-laborer at grain and stock farm) were living at their own farm in the Panama Precinct area, likely in or close to the Dutch settlement of Holland, Lancaster County, located in the southeastern part of Nebraska. In November 1925 Alida died at the age of 64 years in the village of Firth, Lancaster County, Nebraska. Her widower Geert Van Engen died there too, in March 1929, at the age of 71 years.
