Description	:	Geert van Engen was born in April 1857 in the country village of Schoonebeek, located in the northeastern part of the Netherlands, at the border with Germany, the second child and first son of Geert van Engen (34 years old, farmer) and Geertje Schoemakers (21). He was named after his maternal grandfather Geert Schoemakers. Read More	Geert van Engen was born in April 1857 in the country village of Schoonebeek, located in the northeastern part of the Netherlands, at the border with Germany, the second child and first son of Geert van Engen (34 years old, farmer) and Geertje Schoemakers (21). He was named after his maternal grandfather Geert Schoemakers. Schoonebeek became wellknown for its so-called ja-knikkers (yes-men), once pumping up the oil from a rather small oilfield, but the biggest on the West-European continent. He had in Schoonebeek, in the former municipality of Dalen, the following siblings: * Jantje, on December 8, 1855; * Jan, October 28, 1858; * Evert, September 25, 1860. His father Geert van Engen was in all three birth years a farmer. On March 16, 1863 the family Van Engen moved from Schoonebeek, house number 15, to very probably the city of Kampen, located in the northwestern part of the Dutch northeastern province Overijssel, near the mouth of the IJssel River into the -former- Zuidersee (Southern Sea), since 1932 called IJsselmeer (IJssel Lake). Kampen has a theological university. Probably on May 4, 1863 his sister Everdina ("Dina") was born, quite likely in the city of Kampen. However, in 2018 her birth certificate couldn't be found in the provinces Overijssel, Drenthe or elsewhere in the Netherlands. It looks that her birth was "forgotten" to be declared at the townhall of her birthplace. Two months later, July 31, 1863 his mother Geertje Schoemakers died at the age of 28 years in the city of Kampen, province Overijssel. On March 3, 1864 his father Geert van Engen (42 years old, theology student [how amazing!] married in the city of Kampen the seven years younger Gerrigjen Blom (Flower], daughter of Evert Blom and Derkjen Kroese. On December 26, 1864 he had in Kampen a stillborn step-brother. On July 21, 1867 Geert arrived at the age of 10 years with his parents and five siblings, Jantje (11), Jan (8), Evert (5), Everstine (2) and Gerritje (age not mentioned) at the port of New York, Castle Garden, and lived for some years in the Dutch settlement of Pella in Iowa. In August 1870 Geert Van Engen (13 years old, born in the Netherlands), his father Geert Van Engen (48, Netherlands, laborer), his stepmother Gerritje (42, Netherlands) and his siblings Jane (14, Netherlands), John (11, Netherlands), Evert (9, Netherlands), Dina (7, Netherlands) and half-sister Derkje (2, Iowa) were living in the city of Pella, Marion County, Iowa. In June 1880 Garret Venengen (22, laborer), his father Garrot Venengen (58, rail roading), his stepmother Geretye (52) and his siblings John (21, laborer), Avert (19, laborer), Dena (17), Derka (12) and Girtie (9, Iowa) were living in St. Edward, Boone County, located in the northeastern central part of Nebraska. On April 1, 1883 Geert Van Engen married in the unincorporated Dutch community of Holland, Lancaster County, located in the southeastern part of Nebraska, at the age of 26 years the four years younger Elida [Alida Johanna Hendrika] Kroese, also born in the Netherlands, and daughter of James Kroese. In June 1885 Ganet VanEngen lived with his wife in the Panama Precinct area, on a farm in the former Dutch settlement of Pella, Lancaster County, located in the southeastern part of Nebraska. Then they moved in 1893 for 18 years to the very small city of Prairie View, located in the extreme northern part of Kansas, at the border with Nebraska. In June 1900 Geert Van Engen (43, born in April 1857 in Holland, immigrated in 1867, farmer), his wife Alida J H (39, February 1861, Holland, immigrated in 1879, mother of 7 living and 2 deceased children), their children Geert (16, September 1885, Nebraska, farm laborer), John (14, May 1886, Nebraska, farm laborer), Evert (12, September 1888, Nebraska, farm laborer), Albert (10, October 1889, Nebraska, farm laborer), Edrew (8, October 1891, Nebraska), Alida G (5, January 1895, Kansas) and Author (2, April 1898, Kansas) were living on their own farm at Pairie View in Dayton Township, Phillips County, located in the extreme northern part of Kansas, at the border with Nebraska. In April 1910 G Van Engen (53, farmer), his wife Lydia J H (49), their children John (23, farm laborer), Evert (21, farm laborer), Albert (19, farm laborer at home farm), Edward (17, farm laborer at home farm), Lyda (14), Arthur (12), Gertie (10, Kansas) and Henry (4, Kansas) were still living on their own farm in still Prairie View, Dayton Township, Phillips County, Kansas. Prairie View had in 1910 191 people, in 2010 134. In January 1920 Gerrit Van Engen (62, grain and stock farmer), his wife Alida J H (59), their children Alida G (22), Art (22, farm laborer at home farm), Gertie (19), Henry (14), Gerrit (13), Elevarett (11), Myrtle (8) and Edward (27, day-laborer at grain and stock farm) were living at their own farm in the Panama Precinct area, likely in or close to the Dutch settlement of Holland, Lancaster County, located in the southeastern part of Nebraska. On November 16, 1925 his wife Alida died at the age of 64 years in the village of Firth, Lancaster County, Nebraska. Widower Geert Van Engen died there too, in March 1929, at the age of 71 years.
