Mr. Jones enlisted in the Army and served during World War II from 1942 to 1944 with the military police. In 1948, at age 26, he was elected to his first term as a state representative. A Republican, he served 14 terms in the State House of Representatives and eight years as the state Senator representing the Cape and Islands and the Plymouth District. He was a Republican floor leader for much of his legislative service, and was the ranking Republican member of the Ways and Means Committee. Mr. Jones had the distinction of never having lost a legislative bill he sponsored. Legislation he helped pass re-organized the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, placing it within the state college structure funded the Cape Cod Community College at its current location in West Barnstable and established a fire training school for Barnstable County, the first of its kind in the state. He also led the fight to defeat legislation that would have resulted in the loss of $1.6 million in state education aid to Cape communities. Mr. Jones also helped establish a drug abuse treatment center in Barnstable County. Among his other achievements are serving on a state commission that selected the JFK Library as the most appropriate memorial to the late president, helped win approval for a bill making the Otis Air Force Base a permanent facility, and established the "Good Samaritan Law". The Good Samaritan Law protects people who come to the aid of accident victims from subsequent civil suits. Mr. Jones also served on the Barnstable Airport Commission. A lifelong resident of Barnstable, Mr. Jones enjoyed spending summers in Edgartown on Martha's Vineyard and winters in Stowe, VT. He was a member of many local clubs and civic organizations and was an accomplished pilot, sailor and skier. He was also an avid reader and collector of marine antiques. Father of Stephen of Stowe, VT, Candace, Jey, and Holly, all of Barnstable. Grandfather of ten. Brother of Charles of Cummaquid, Phillip of Arizona, Harriet of Barnstable, and Ruth of Sandwich. Predeceased by his first wife Betty Ann (Lowr) Jones, his second wife Betty (White) Jones, his parents William Almond Jones (b. March 27, 1885; d. August 24, 1941 at 56 years) and Elsie May (Lapham) Jones (b. August 27, 1897; d. October 15, 1977 at 80 years), and his grandparents Arthur W. (b. November 30, 1858; d. December 11, 1938 at 80 years) and Harriet “Hattie” (Brockway) Lapham (b. October 1869; d. February 17, 1929 at 59 years). Burial was private. An alternative DOB of June 29, 1921 and a birth place of Barnstable was verbally suggested with no back-up documents provided. His obituary clearly stated he was born in Marstons Mills (located in Barnstable County). I didn't put born in Marstons Mills in the bio as it is in the birth location. I have changed DOB to the suggested date as it supports the age of 80.
