Description	:	Allen C. Winkey, 85, of Shell Rock, Iowa, died Thursday morning, November 21, 2002, at Allison Health Care Center of heart failure. Allen was born on February 23, 1917, on the family homestead outside of Shell Rock, the son of Charles and Ina Mae (Allen) Winkey. He attended school through the eighth grade in rural Shell Rock. One June 2, 1937, Allen was married to Elsie Bencke in Woodstock, Illinois. Elsie died in 1951. Allen was later married to Delores Hill in September 1951, in Kirksville, Missouri. Winkey, 85, of Shell Rock, Iowa, died Thursday morning, November 21, 2002, at Allison Health Care Center of heart failure. Allen was born on February 23, 1917, on the family homestead outside of Shell Rock, the son of Charles and Ina Mae (Allen) Winkey. He attended school through the eighth grade in rural Shell Rock. One June 2, 1937, Allen was married to Elsie Bencke in Woodstock, Illinois. Elsie died in 1951. Allen was later married to Delores Hill in September 1951, in Kirksville, Missouri. The couple made their home in Shell Rock where they raised their family. Allen worked for the Illinois Central Railroad for 24 years and for Viking Pump in Cedar Falls for 11 years, retiring in 1979. Al was an outdoor enthusiast who loved his huge vegetable garden and traveling to Missouri to hunt, fish and pick up fresh pecans. He particularly enjoyed his friends and acquaintances with the New Hartford Lions Club, serving at the pancake breakfasts and working at the bingo games. Al put many miles on his little red pickup going to auctions, having coffee with his buddies or supervising a variety of projects. Al will be remembered for his quick smile and for having a pocketful of fireballs to give his special friends. Al is survived by his five daughters, Judy Miller of Shell Rock, Sharon White of Phoenix, Arizona, Deb Bennett and her husband Duane of Waverly, Di Miller and her husband Randy of Clarskville, Denise Rethamel and her husband Bill of Muscatine; two sons, Steve Winkey and his wife Diane of Aplington, David Winkey and his wife Dianne of Lockhart, Texas; one brother, Harry Winkey of Shell Rock; one sister, Ethel Morrill of Waverly; twenty grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Elsie in 1951; his second wife Delores in June 2002; three brothers, Justin Winkey, Darrell Winkey, Howard Cain Culver; five sisters, Velma Mathes, Grace Welch, Illa Mae Keller, Olive Martin and Ruth Graff. A memorial service was held on Saturday, November 23, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. at Heritage United Methodist Church with Pastor Nathan N. Frazee officiating. Cremation was held on Friday, November 22, 2002. Memorials may be directed to the New Hartford Lions Club. - contributor Family member -
