Born 2 Oct. 1847 and crossed the plains in 1860, with an ox team and settled in Marin County with his father Dr. Ben Look. Later they moved to Grizzly Bluff. Look was the first man to drive a 6 horse Stage Coach, over the hiway between Hydesville and Alderpoint and was for several years stage driver between Eureka and Hydesville. In 1880 he with his family moved to Seattle, where he took up the painting business and in which he continued after return to this section in 1884. Up until 4 years ago he was in the paper and painting business, when his illness prevented his participation in this work. He has lived in Rio Dell the past two years. HUMBOLDT REDWOODS STATE PARK - THE COMPLETE GUIDE by Jerry and Gisela Rohde LOOK PRAIRIE ROAD SUMMARY: One of the most scenic routes in the park, this road winds its way up to Peavine Ridge through varied woodlands, past exquisite flowers, and across a charming prairie complete with rustic barn. LENGTH: 3.4 miles, one-way ELEVATION CHANGE: 2,000-foot gain, south to north LOCATION: The southern end of the route is at Mattole Road, 4.2 miles west of the 101 Freeway and just before Harper Creek; the northern end joins Peavine Road. DESCRIPTION: Look Prairie Road promptly passes a locked metal gate as it begins to climb out of the Rockefeller Forest. After a sharp switchback, the route winds through grassy woodlands that in the spring are dotted with two-eyed violets. Soon the road crosses the western edge of Luke Prairie, mile 0.2, at a point called "Blue Slide." Here masses of blue-gray earth slump downhill in rolling, grass-covered heaps. This slow moving "earthflow" contrasts sharply with the Spectacular "mudflows" of Cuneo Creek, where huge sections of the mountainside have slid into the stream bed far below. Leaving Luke Prairie, the route climbs gradually as it passes near the wide-spreading limbs of several Oregon white oaks. Just ahead, the center of the roadbed fills with a springtime profusion of long-beaked storksbill geraniums. Appropriately close to the storksbill is a flock of birdsfoot buttercups. California black oaks line the route as it approaches the shaded confines of Harper Creek, mile 0.5. The road now straightens and cuts through a patch of sloping prairie, passing a struggling, solitary apple tree before entering a dark stand of redwood and Douglas fir. At mile 0.8 the route emerges from the forest onto a flat grassland. Directly ahead, framed by a wide-branching oak, is the Look Prairie Barn. The road passes between the barn and the ranch yard, drops to cross a creeklet, and then winds uphill along the western edge of an old orchard. Rising amid the decaying apple trees is the larger form of a single Spanish chestnut. The route turns right at the base of a steep hillside and climbs eastward past a large, rounded bigleaf maple; just ahead, patches of popcorn flower rise from the road. At mile 1.1 the route enters a stretch of burned forest and bends left to follow the canyonside above a branch of Calf Creek. The forest duff here is home to numerous two-eyed violets and calypso orchids; the small and delicate flowers are nearly obscured by the litter of pine needles. On the bank to the left at 1.5 miles is an opening to the upper end of Look Prairie. A short climb off the road leads to the madrone-fringed prairie summit - an ideal picnic spot. From here, the grassy hillside descends gently southward to a knobby knoll that offers good views of Grasshopper Peak and the Bull Creek canyon. The Prairie itself is also worth a look, for this is the best spot in the Park to find the native bunch of grasses that once covered such open areas; other Park prairielands saw greater encroachment of domestic grass species as a result of ranching, but this spot was somehow spared. Beyond the knoll, the prairie drops down a ski-run-like slope that ends just above the orchard and barn. The madrones that rim this section of prairie have strangely clipped lower foliage - browsing deer have eaten everything they could reach. THE LOOK PRAIRIE BARN The aging building seems almost engulfed by the ground, its low-pitched roof flattened against the prairie. It appears that the barn might disappear into the grass at any moment, yet there is a feeling that it has been waiting, with utmost patience, for yet another travelers visit. Did its builder stand at this spot when he first formed the barn's image in his mind's eye? It seems so, for the structure fits the setting as if it were part of a painting. A latticework of poison oak climbs beside the barn door. Inside, the ground floor is nearly empty; the stalls to either side still have a sense of snugness. Some bottles, bleary with age, have been placed on the stall sills, and a few rusty implements have been hung overhead. A pile of ancient hay reposes in a corner. At the rear, a ladder ascends to the loft, its rungs well worn but still able to hold weight. The loft floor is made of huge redwood planks, three inches thick, that even now bear the marks of their hewing. Spikes the size of dinner knives anchor the planks to the beams underneath. Here in the loft there is a quietness, a feeling of farmers' peace, that fills the space beneath the broken shingles. All around is the smell of old, dry wood. The loft door opens out to a view of the ranch yard. In spring, the ground below is filled with the progression of the season: daffodils nearly past flowering, periwinkle in purple bloom, iris yet to be. One fruit tree colors the air above the yard, the trunk of a second now only a shattered silhouette. Down the hillside from them sounds the thin trickle of a creek. Over all spreads the darkened limbs of the old oak. Above, a gray sky; below, the still prairie. The Humboldt Historian - VOL. 44 - NO. 4 - WINTER 1996; LOOK PRAIRIE BARN LOST TO FIRE One of Humboldt county's most beloved landmarks was lost in early October when a fire of undetermined origin claimed the Look Prairie Barn in Humboldt Redwoods State Park. The small but striking structure was long a favorite with artists, hikers, historians, and appreciators of rural architecture. Near the turn of the century, rancher Allan Look and this six sons built the barn at the edge of the prairie that now bears their name. They hand hewed redwood timbers for the interior, including huge planks, some three inches thick, that formed the barn floor. Redwood shakes formed the siding and roof, darkening to a deep richness over time. A fringe of poison oak attached itself to the barn door, while a gracefully spreading oak framed the building for viewers when they entered the prairie from the south. Behind the barn, a great bigleaf maple stood upon the hillside, its leaves a mass of gold in the fall. The Look Prairie Barn was of a handful of such structures found on park lands in Humboldt county. Four barns remain at Humboldt Redwoods State Park, while the Bald Hills section of Redwood National Park has five others. Together they form that small portion of our local agricultural legacy accessible to the public. With the loss of the Look barn, that legacy has lost its brightest light.
