The bride and bridegroom report a delightful trip to Mt. Lowe, and various places of interest in and around Los Angeles. They will be busy next week getting their cozy cottage on East ‘I’ street ready for occupancy and will announce their “at home” day later to their many friends.
It appears that Allen and Frances Baird never had children.

M. Doty at their home on West I street. The honoree had gone out to spend the evening “to talk radio” and in the midst of the conversation the self-invited guests appeared at the Doty home and soon a merry party was in progress. There were two lovely birthday cakes, a pink creation and one smoothly iced in white, each adorned with candles. Mrs. Doty baked the cakes. Calla lillies and fern adorned the center of the table where the guests were served hot cocoa and slices of the birthday cake. The evening was featured with selections of music, both vocal and instrumental. Those favored were: Mr. and Mrs. Allen Baird, Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Baird, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Haughey and baby (and 6 more people).
Colton Daily Courier (Colton, CA.), P. 6, Col. 2 Tue., Aug. 19, 1924 Baird’s Return from Vacation at Crestline Mr. and Mrs. Allen Baird have returned from a delightful vacation of a week’s duration spent at Crestline, at the cabin of Miss Mabel Holcomb, a sister of Mrs. Baird. While there they made several pleasant calls upon Colton friends who are having vacations in different places in the mountains. They say Mrs. Fred Lewis and Mrs. Knopsnyder and others. A sail around Lake Arrowhead was an enjoyable diversion for the Bairds. Mr. Baird is employed in the freight office of the local Southern Pacific lines.

San Bernardino Daily Sun (San Bernardino, CA.), P. 15, Col. 5 Thu., Aug. 10, 1933 Excerpt from: Lawn Party Serves To Observe Tenth Natal Day of Girl At a pretty lawn party sponsored by her mother, Mrs. Ethel Haughey, and her grandmother, Mrs. C. W. Baird, Hazel Haughey yesterday celebrated her tenth birthday. The happy function was held at the Baird home on East F street, Colton. A number of Hazel’s little friends joined in the afternoon’s celebration. A delicious birthday cake, baked by the honoree’s aunt, Mrs. Allen Baird, was served with ice cream. Ten candles topped the cake. The refreshments were served out-of-doors, where the children later played many interesting games. Musical numbers were also enjoyed during the afternoon. The little girl’s uncle, Allen Baird, arrived at the party in time to direct a number of the games.

C. Burton Thrall, of Ontario, was named chairman and Allen R. Baird, of Colton, secretary to be in charge of the 1935 reunion, called for the first Sunday in June.

They will be accompanied in the trip by their nephew, Charles Haughey, also of Colton. It will be the young man’s first visit in the northern section of the state. They will make the trip by train. In the North, they will visit the Southern Pacific shops and take photographs to add to their collection of train pictures. Both men make a hobby of studying locomotives, shops and railroad development. On the return trip the trio will visit the exposition at San Francisco. They will return to the South in time to attend the opening of the new Union station at Los Angeles early next month.

Colton Daily Courier (Colton, CA.), P. 2, Col. 1 Wed., Sep. 17, 1947 Allen Baird Said Improving After Appendectomy Allen Baird of Colton is reported to be seriously ill at Community hospital in San Bernardino where he is a patient. Mr. Baird underwent an operation Monday night for a ruptured appendix. His condition is said to be satisfactory, he is still unable to see visitors.

W. A. Jennings. Sermon subject of the pastor will be “Christianity is Christ.” The evening meeting will be highlighted by a duet by Mrs. Baird and Mr. Jennings.
San Bernardino Daily Sun (San Bernardino, CA.), P. 18, Col. 7 Wed., Dec. 3, 1952 Baird, 39 Years With SP, Given Retirement Fete COLTON - A farewell party for Allen R. Baird, retiring employe of the Southern Pacific Railway, was staged Monday afternoon by fellow employee in the freight office at Colton, where Baird had spent the entire 39 years of his work with the company. The party was a surprise to Baird, who came into the office to find his fellow workers gathered around a huge, decorated cake on which were the words, “Spike, 39 years, S. P.” Spike is the nickname borne by the retiring railway demurrage clerk in local railway circles. A check was presented to Baird during the afternoon’s festivities. He came to Colton from Ohio in 1905 and went to work for the Southern Pacific Railway in January, 1913, in the same freight house in which his retirement party was given. Baird applied for disability retirement in July, 1952, and the retirement papers were completed as of Nov. 30. Living with his wife, Frances L., at 259 N. Tenth St., Baird has not only been a well-known figure in railway circles, but has been active in musical circles, using his fine bass voice freely in choirs, chorus work and concerts. He has been a member of the railway quartet since its organization and has been active in Colton Chapter of the Society for the preservation and Advancement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America.
Sun-Telegram (San Bernardino, CA.), P. 29, Col. 1 Sat., May 1, 1971 Allen R. Baird, Colton Allen R. Baird, 81, of 263 W. ‘G’ St., Colton, died Thursday in Fontana. He was born in Ohio and was a 66-year resident of Colton. A 69-year resident of California, Baird was a retired clerk for Southern Pacific Railways. Baird was a member of the First Baptist Church in Colton. Survivors include his brother, Burton, of Fontana and his sister, Ethel Aston of Colton. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Knopsnyder Chapel, Colton, with burial following in Pioneer Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel after noon tomorrow. |
