Daughter of Charles Gorsline and Florence Rebecca Ann Seller OBITUARY THE CHARITON HERALD-PATRIOT Chariton, Iowa Thursday, October 17, 1996 DeVORE Alma Gorsline DeVore, daughter of Charles and Florence Gorsline, was born March 8, 1899, near North English, Iowa. She passed away at the Corydon Care Center on Tuesday, Oct. 8, 1996, at the age of 97 years and seven months. At the age of nine, Alma moved to Decatur County and lived the rest of her life in Clarke and Wayne County. She worked at various creameries and stores until 1933. Alma and her mother moved in with her sister, Ethel DeVore and family at that time. She lovingly cared for her mother for several years and later for her sister, Ethel, until their deaths. Alma was an avid reader and poet. Over the years she had many poems published and won many poetry awards. Many of her poems were published in the Lyrical Iowa. In 1989, she was invited to Washington, D.C., to receive the Golden Poet Award, but was unable to attend. For many years her family and friends have enjoyed her poems. Alma loved playing the piano, tatting, sewing and quilting. She enjoyed flowers and watching the birds in winter. In 1962, Alma married Clyde DeVore and they had almost 17 years together before his death in 1979. In 1980, she moved to Humeston. While she was able, she enjoyed going to church, the library, and shopping. She was a member of the Christian United Methodist Church in Humeston. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Ethel DeVore, brothers, Ray, Roy, Louis and George Gorsline; stepsons, Wayne DeVore and wife Geneva, Boyd Gorsline and wife Zola; one step-grandson, Dale DeVore; and great-great-step-grandson, Kenny Lenzine. Survivors include stepdaughters and stepsons, Muriel Sponsler and husband, Robert of Humeston; June Halferty of Numa; Rex DeVore and wife, Sue of Williamson; and Paul DeVore and wife, Dorothy of Russell. There are 20 step-grandchildren, several great and great-great-step grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 11, 1996, at the Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton. The Rev. EvaLynn Carlson officiated with burial in the Humeston Cemetery. Serving as bearers were Orva DeVore, Glenn Heckman, Doyce Sponsler, Jim DeVore, John Halferty and Mike Halferty.
