Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. MDT today at Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen. Alma was born Nov. 3, 1926, in Hazen, the daughter of Emilia (Wiedrich) and Robert Scheid. She grew up north of Hazen, the sixth of seven children. She was baptized on Dec. 16, 1926, in American Lutheran Church, north of Hazen. Her sponsors were John and Susan Wiedrich. She was confirmed Feb. 23, 1941, at Peace Lutheran Church. She was a member of the Mary circle for many years. Alma married Harold Mattheis, June 11, 1950. They made their home on Harold's family farm, until Harold's passing in August 1983. She moved into Hazen in 1984. She started working for the Hazen High School, in maintenance, in 1985, and retired in 2000. She loved working there and so enjoyed all the kids through the years, and it allowed her to keep a close eye on her grandchildren. During retirement, she enjoyed taking trips to Minnesota to visit with the youngest grandchildren. She also spent time taking care of her flowers, and making many afghans. She enjoyed playing pinochle with family and friends. She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Carol and Tom Sojka, O'Neill, Neb., Naomi Mattheis, Maple Grove, Minn., and Jennifer and John Bergman, Otsego, Minn.; two sons and two daughters-in-law, Don and Judy Mattheis, Dickinson, and Wayne and Paulette Mattheis, Hazen; 14 grandchildren; one sister, Clara Mattheis, Beulah; two brothers and two sister-in-laws, Walter and Viola Scheid and Bennie and Elaine Scheid, all of Hazen; and one sister-in-law, Lorena Scheid, Beulah. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold, of 33 years; two brothers, Herb and Eddie; and one sister, Esther.
