Holden of Manly _____ Last week's Anchor contained news of the death of Mrs. T. J. Holden, of Manly, and for this week's issue we have been furnished an appropriate sketch of the life and activities of this well-known woman. The funeral was held last Thursday afternoon at the Bethel Evangelical church in Manly, with Rev. R. G. Ludy in charge. Interment was made in the Plymouth cemetery. The following obituary was read at the funeral services: Almeda Elisabeth Holden, nee Overholt, was born June 13, 1850, in the province of Ontario, Canada, and died in Manly March 14, 1928, aged 77 years, 9 months and one day. She was the fifth child of eight children born to John and Rachel Overholt. The period of her life has been one of eventful history. She has seen the beginning and end of the civil, Spanish and world wars and an immense amount of scientific progress. When a small child her father and mother and family moved to Allamakee county, Iowa. Here she spent her girlhood days and received a rural school education. About the close of the civil war she came to Worth county and here met and married John Randall, who died in 1917. To this union were born three boys, Mac, who died in 1918, Claus of Manly and Arthur, who died in 1888 at the age of three years. Mr. and Mrs. Randall moved to Nebraska to a homestead in 1873. The trip was made in a covered wagon. They drove their 26 head of cattle and 28 head of sheep and she took her turn driving the stock, regardless of the fact that at this time Mac was only eighteen months of age. The start was made from twelve miles west of Northwood and the trip over the roadless prairie took them six weeks. At Carroll, Iowa, a rattlesnake caused the loss of their best horse and the next day a train killed three of their cattle. The claim which Mr. Randall had homesteaded had been "jumped" by another due to the fact they were somewhat late in moving on it. With the true pluck of a pioneer woman, she camped and cared for the stock while Mr. Randall walked about sixty miles back to Lincoln, Neb., to establish his right to his claim. Because of service rendered in the civil war he was reinstated on his claim. After six years in Nebraska, they returned to the farm south of Manly. She has seen Manly grow from a section house fo the present size. The deceased was one of the charter members of the Bethel United Evangelical church, now called the Bethel Evangelical, and has been an active member up to the present time always giving liberally of her time and means to aid in the development of God's kingdom. She, together with the Hungerford, Klinefelter and Long families, had a vision in the years past of a pleasing church building, which dream was realized in the erection of the edifice from which she is now carried to her final resting place. Not only was she interested in local kingdom building but generally as is manifest in the fact that she was a regular contributor to the Christian home for orphans in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The Bible was her favorite book and "It Is Well With My Soul" her chosen song. She was a member of the Woman's Relief Corps and also the Rebekahs with whom she had very pleasant associations. Eight years ago she was married to Thomas J. Holden, who with one son, five grandchildren, and two brothers, George and Fred Overholt of Minneapolis, and several nieces and nephews, mourn her departure. Contributor: Darlene (46635178) •
