Mrs. Wilcox was one of the early pioneer ladies of Wright county. She came here with her husband June 16, 1856, consequently, was among the first to arrive. They lived here continuously until 1894 and then moved to Kansas. But two years later came back, preferring a home in Iowa. She was married to Mr. Wilcox in Bureau Co., Ill., in 1848, and was the mother of eight children — four sons, and four daughters, and now, with her husband, four sons and three daughters survive her. In March 1864, the husband enlisted and went south to carry a musket in defense of his country, leaving her with the home and six little children to care for for nearly two years. But she was equal to the emergency, possessing the courage of the true Spartan mother. In maidenhood she united with the M. E. church, keeping up the membership until they moved to Kansas and then she joined the Christian church. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Shaftoe and for burial the remains were then taken to the Troy cemetery, a large procession of relatives and sympathizing friends accompanying them to pay their last respects to this estimable woman and mother. BOONE VALLEY GAZETTE Eagle Grove, Iowa Thursday, August 11, 1898 Page 1; Column 3 In the demise of Mrs. Daniel Wilcox, which occurred on Wednesday, August 3, 1898, Wright county loses one of her oldest settlers and one of her most estimable women. Mrs. Wilcox was a member of the first party to reach Wright county. With the party was William Stryker and it is probably true that he erected the first house in the county and that built by the Wilcox's was the second. Mr. Stryker died some months ago. In the many years that have passed since then the family have been residents of the county continuously except for two years. They have been of the sort that build up a new country and give it a growth that will count in future years and the loss of the wife and mother is one in which a large section of country shares. Almedia Stryker was born in Trumbull county, Ohio, August 9, 1830, and died in Eagle Grove August 3,1898, lacking only six days of being sixty-eight years of age. In 1848 she was married to Daniel Wilcox in Bureau county, Illinois, and to them were born eight children, four sons and four daughters, of whom, with the aged father, all survive except one daughter. On July 16, 1856 she came to Wright county, Iowa and with the exception of two years, 1894 to 1896, has lived in the county ever since. In March, 1864 her husband enlisted in the army, leaving his wife with six small children for over a year and a half but she struggled nobly as did many other mothers in those trying days and with a hardy womanhood kept the family together. When a girl Mrs. Wilcox became a member of the Methodist church, but four years ago in Kansas united with the Christian church. The funeral was held Thursday at the Troy church, Rev.
