Description	:	From 1863 until his death in 1902, A.A. Johnston was closely connected with agricultural interests of Bremer county and in the course of years became a prominent and successful agriculturist, owning two hundred and five acres of valuable land in Frederika township. Johnston was closely connected with agricultural interests of Bremer county and in the course of years became a prominent and successful agriculturist, owning two hundred and five acres of valuable land in Frederika township. He was born in St. Lawrence county, New York, June 6, 1844, and is a son of John N. and Mary (Moon) Johnston, who moved to Winnebago county, Illinois, when the subject of this review was still a child and who came to Bremer county, Iowa, in 1863. A.A. Johnston acquired his education in the common schools of Winnebago county, Illinois, and there learned the stone-mason's trade, which he followed until he came to Bremer county, Iowa, where he engaged in farming. He accumulated two hundred and five acres of land in Frederika township, adjoining the village of Frederika, and he developed this from an unimproved tract into a productive machinery. Mr. Johnston was very successful in the conduct of his interests, for he was a resourceful and progressive business man, and at his death he was justly regarded as one of the leading farmers in this locality. In Bremer county, Mr. Johnston married Miss Anna A. Bourcy, who was born in Oneida county, New York, a daughter of Anthony and Elizabeth (Greenwood) Bourcy, the former a native of France and the latter of New York. The parents came to Iowa from Aurora, Illinois, in 1853, settling in Richland township, Chickasaw county, where the father engaged in farming until his death, which occurred when he was seventy-six years of age. His wife passed away in Frederika, at the age of eighty-four. Mr. and Mrs. Johnston became the parents of two children: Viola, who lives with her mother; and Bertha, the wife of Fred W. Bergman, a farmer in Douglas township. Mrs. Johnston resides upon part of the homestead, within the corporate limits of Frederika. She has been a resident of Iowa since her childhood and has a wide circle of friends within the borders of Bremer county to whom her many excellent qualities of character have greatly endeared her. Mr. Johnston was a lifelong member of the Methodist Episcopal church and he gave his political allegiance to the democratic party. He served as justice of the peace and in a number of township offices, proving a farsighted and capable official. He was justly accorded a place among the prominent and representative citizens of Frederika township, for he belonged to that class of men whose enterprising spirit is used not alone for personal benefit but to advance the public good along many lines.
