Read More	Son of John Newton & Mary (Moon) Johnston Father of Alice Elizabeth Whitney, Anna Lovina Johnson, Mary Diana, Amanda Jane Johnson, John Newton,Dr. Edwin Nathan, Angeline Amelia Maurer & Lucy Marietta Madden Obit from the Waterloo Evening Courier - May 2, 1913 Pages 6 & 7 Frederika - John Wesley Johnston, son of John N. and Mary Johnston was born Oct. 10, 1832, in Holland, Orleans county, Vermont, and died at his home near Frederika April 19, 1913, aged 80 years, six months and nine days. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Maurer of Readlyn were here Tuesday to attend the funeral of Mr. Johnston. On Jan. 28, 1884, he was united in marriage to Miss Lavina Crawford with whom he was permitted to live happily for nearly 55 years, she having preceded him to that better world on Sept. 18, 1908. Their marriage took place at Pierspoint, St. Lawrence county, New York. The young couple resided there for one year and then moved to Winnebago county, Illinois, where they lived for nine years, coming to Bremer county in the fall of 1864. They first settled on a farm in Douglas township but later moved to the farm north of Frederika where he lived 39 years until the time of his death. While living in St. Lawrence county, New York, Mr. Johnston joined the Baptist church but on moving to Frederika both he and his wife united with the M. E. church of this place. Mr. Johnston was a man of good character, desiring in all things to be a Christian. He was quite modest and unassuming, gentle and kind to all whom he met. He was a friend to all of God's creatures, dumb animals and birds. He was especially fond of flowers and music and during the long weeks of his intense suffering he repeated hymns which to him were inspiring and helpful in preparing him for that better world to which he was soon called to go. Although the last weeks of his life were spent in much suffering, the end came quietly and peacefully. The loved ones watching by his bedside hardly knew when the freed soul had left the tired body. He leaves to mourn his departure seven children, two sons, John N. and Dr. E. N. Johnston of Fredericksburg, and five daughters, Mrs. Alice Whitney of Pennsylvania, Mrs. Anna Johnson of Frederika, Mrs. Jane Johnson of Poplar, Minn., Mrs. Angie Maurer of New Hampton, and Mrs. Lucy Madden of near Sumner. One daughter, Mary D., died July 29, 1884. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. Fannie Baxter, of this place. The funeral was held at the home Tuesday, April 22. Rev. J. B. Bird of Monona, Ia., preached the funeral sermon and the body was laid to rest by the side of his wife in the Alcock cemetery. Information supplied by Linda Hagedorn Finley
