Description	:	Alonzo John "AJ" Griffin was an Ellendale pioneer settler, of English descent, born in Nova Scotia, Canada and spent his early adult years in Massachusetts. He was the second of nine children born to Thomas Chipman Griffin & Rebecca Rockwell Griffin. His siblings were: Harris, Daniel, Wallace, Remina "Mina" Griffin Stewart, Athelia Griffin Hill, Noble, Florena "Rena" Griffin Churchill & Annie Griffin Remick. Read More	Alonzo John "AJ" Griffin was an Ellendale pioneer settler, of English descent, born in Nova Scotia, Canada and spent his early adult years in Massachusetts. He was the second of nine children born to Thomas Chipman Griffin & Rebecca Rockwell Griffin. His siblings were: Harris, Daniel, Wallace, Remina "Mina" Griffin Stewart, Athelia Griffin Hill, Noble, Florena "Rena" Griffin Churchill & Annie Griffin Remick. His family was involved in the leather shoe business in Boston, and he and his wife, Susan, lived in Wayland, MA. In 1882, Alonzo set off for the California Gold Rush. During the trip, he heard about new opportunities in Dakota Territory, and so he decided to investigate the possibility of becoming a land owner, and disembarked the train in Aberdeen, Dakota Territory (the end of the line at the time, 1882).He then pumped a handcar on the rest of the rail road tracks to Ellendale. There, he staked his claim, built a house and sent for his family, (wife Susan Cox Griffin, and surviving children, Rebecca, Orrin, Ralph, Gertrude, Grace & Myron) to join him (oldest son, John, had died of pneumonia in MA at age 3). The Griffin farm was six miles west of Ellendale on what would become Highway 11. They raised grain crops, cattle and horses. Alonzo was a member of the Masonic Lodge. Son Ralph would later take over the farm and Alonzo & Susan moved into town. Susan died in 1912 and Alonzo in 1915. They are buried in the Ellendale Cemetery. His parents and brothers, Daniel, Noble, Harris, & Wallace as well as sisters Annie Remick, Athelia Hill, Florena "Rena" Stewart, & Remina "Mina" Churchill are buried in Lakeview Cemetery in Wayland, MA as is their young son, John Chipman Griffin. Their son, Orrin, died near Ellendale as a teenager, but daughters Rebecca Griffin Snyder, Gertrude Griffin Lynde, Grace Griffin Morrow Cowles, and sons Ralph and Melvin lived long lives. Alonzo's grandchildren were: Everett Snyder, Ethel Snyder Baker, Eva Snyder Winslow, Orrin Snyder, Frederick Snyder, Ruth Snyder Babcock, Dorothy Snyder Bothwell, Irene Griffin Burnett, Noble Griffin, Etta Griffin Brauer, Alonzo J "Lonnie" Griffin, Llewellyn R Lynde, Orrin Lynde, Grace Lynde Morrow Cowles, Jennie Wright McCarten, Gertrude Wright Hoel, Susie Wright Eckberg,, Florence Wright Brookbank, Alice Griffin Gerdon, Ted Griffin, Dr. Everett Griffin, Melvin Griffin, Evelyn Griffin Hoffman, Helen Griffin Wanek, Mary Griffin Dixon & Ralph Griffin.
