Miller Funeral Is Held Here on Friday Afternoon The remains of A. L. Miller were returned from Wapato, Washington, last Thursday and funeral services were conducted at the United Presbyterian church in Benkelman Friday afternoon by Rev. J. W. Woodworth. Pallbearers were Ward Artist, Harve Selvy, Frank Walsh, Verdie Baney, J. J. Bochert and Walter Edwards. Singers were R. D. Druliner, Sr., Lloyd Boswell, R. D. Druliner, Jr., and Harry Ough, with Mrs. D. L. Ough at the piano. Two ladies, whom we understand were from Grant, sang "The Old Rugged Cross," but we have been unable to procure their names. Miss Lizzie McEvoy was in charge of arrangements and interment was in the Benkelman cemetery. Mr. Miller was known as one of the county's most capable and thorough farmers here from Indianola to buy what was then known as a run-down farm, liberally sprinkled with cockleburrs and other noxious weeds to the point that it was considered undesirable if not all but impossible and he built his far up until it became one of the most productive. He was unusually successful in growing corn and in the years past during the days of corn shucking contests his fields served as a contest ground. He loved to see a farm well kept and in doing this he knew the value of paint and he spared neither time nor expense in keeping his improvements well preserved and attractive. After Mrs. Miller's death Mr. Miller continued to live on his farm alone and it was said that no woman could have been more careful or painstaking in keeping her house in order. During the twelve years that Mr. Miller served his district as county commissioner he exerted his best efforts to give the county the best he had in service and he was tireless to that end. He was a man of great energy and of a discerning nature and he was thoughtful of his neighbors and friends which accounted in no small degree for the universal popularity he enjoyed among his fellow man during the years that Dundy county was his home. Alonzo L. Miller, son of Samuel and Mary E. Miller, was born at Ligonier, Indiana, on March 2, 1874, and died May 18, 1947, at the age of 73 years. He leaves to mourn his passing four sons, Lovell and Gail of Portland, Oregon; Francis of Wapato, Washington and Vernon of New Castle, Wyoming; four daughters, Hazel King of Casper, Wyoming; Marie James and Vada Carey of Wapato, Washington and Ruby Pinkerton of Benkelman, Nebraska; four sisters, Lillie Dutcher of McCook, Nebraska; Laura Junker of Indianola, Nebraska; Hattie Boze of Longmont, Colorado and Lucy Mulligan of Los Angeles, California; twenty-one grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren and other relatives and friends. Preceding him in death were his wife, Clara, in 1936; one brother, Charley, in 1927 and one sister, Lena. For 32 years he was a resident of Dundy county actively engaged in farming work, during which time he served as County Commissioner for twelve years. Mr. Miller took active part in civic affairs and worked toward the betterment of the community. In 1943 Mr. Miller moved from Benkelman to Wapato, Washington, to be near his children, where he lived until his passing. He appeared to be in good until he was suddenly stricken with a heart attack and was rushed to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Yakima, Washington, where he died shortly after his admittance. Lon Miller was a loving husband, a devoted father, a good neighbor and a friend to all. He will be greatly missed by his immediate family, relatives and a host of friends.
