Read More	MACOMBER, Alonzo -- CIVIL WAR VETERAN -- 26 Apr 1839 -- 9 Aug 1914 -- Grace Hill -- Hawarden -- block 41, lot 1 From the Thursday, August 13, 1914 Hawarden Independent: OLD SOLDIER PASSES AWAY Alonzo Macomber Answers Last Roll Call on Sunday Alonzo Macomber, one of the old settlers of Virginia township, and a veteran of the Civil war, passed away Sunday morning after an illness of some months from hardening of the arteries. Funeral services were held Tuesday, at the Methodist church in this city, Rev. C. H. Young, pastor of the M. E. church, preaching the funeral sermon. Comrades of the deceased acted as pall bearers. Interment was made in the Hawarden cemetery. The deceased had made his home in this vicinity for more than thirty years and was held in high esteem by all who knew him. Alonzo Macomber was born near Galena, Ill., April 26, 1839. While still a small child he removed with his parents to Cascade, Iowa. Here he grew to manhood. During the Civil war he enlisted under his country's flag in the 21st Iowa infantry. On March 1st, 1865, he was united in marriage with Miss Martha Hamilton. For several years they lived in Delaware county, Iowa, and about thirty years ago they moved to Union county, S. D. He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs. S. McGloghlon of Union county, Mrs. J. M. Reynolds of Sioux City, and one son, James of Elk Point, S. D. Also one sister, Mrs. Swope, of Boise, Idaho, and one brother, Rufus Macomber, of Cascade, Iowa; also by seven grandchildren. In early life he united with the Adventist church but after coming to South Dakota he united with the Congregational church of Hudson. Among the relatives and friends from a distance who came to attend the funeral were Mrs. Ed Tilton of Manchester, Iowa; Mrs. T. Hammill of Cascade, Iowa; Smith Gilson of Newton, Iowa; Rufus Macomber, Cascade, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Reynolds, Sioux City and H. D. Crawford of Elk Point. -------------------------
