Description	:	This tombstone appears to only be for Clarissa. I am looking for more proof that Alonzo is truly buried in this cemetery like an obituary, the other side of the tombstone or cemetery records. This Alonzo is the son of Eli and Louisa Talbert Myer. In the 1870 census it appears that Alonzo and wife Clarissa are living with his parents and in 1880 and 1900 they are in the next house. In the 1910 census it appears Alonzo has married a lady 15 years younger than Alonzo. Following are two letters that Alonzo's uncle Harrison B. Talbert wrote next to the last day in 1863 to Alonzo and his brother Louis, and the other letter was to their mother Louisa. Louisa it is reported was a minister. Also when Harrison left home (Shelby County, Indiana) in 1861 for the war Alonzo was about 10 years of age and he is probably still thinking of Alonzo as being 10 years old. ________________ CLICK on the photos one (two or three) times to enlarge and read. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx On New Year's Day, 1863, President Lincoln set all slaves free. Slaves and their children attained their freedom as Union soldiers advanced into the South. If you were a slave child being freed by the Union soldiers as the soldiers passed through wouldn't your "eyes and teeth shine?" Following is Harrison B. Talbert's letter from Huntingdon Carroll Co., Tennessee to his young nephews, Alonzo and Louis Myer. Alonzo and Louis probably had never seen a black person. _____ 1863 Wednesday Night Dec. "30th" / " 63 Dear Nephews Alonzo & Louis; I was very agreeably surprised on the 6th inst [of this month] on receiving those letters from you, and I was surprised again to see how well they were composed, and wrote, why there is lots of young men here in the Army that cannot write, or compose a letter as well as you did, and a great many too that cannot neither read nor write. Be good boys and go to School every day that you have the chance to go, for an education is a great thing in this world. I remember well when I was your size and going to School I could not see the use of it (page 2) and was consequently naughty, and like the Drone in a Bee hive, idled away my time, when if, I had been industrious and improve my time, I might have been a good scholar, but alas; when I see my error it is too late, and I now warn you against being a naughty School boy. When your letter came to hand I was at the great city of St" Louis Missouri, but now I am away down in [Confederate] Tennessee a long ways from St Louis and a long ways from home and in my travels I see many curiosities. I know it would make Louis, (and I expect Alonzo too) laugh to see about a dozen little darkies stuck up on the fence watching us pass, with their teeth and eyes shining (page 3) like so many diamonds, and chuffy face that shines as though it had been greased and hair short and kinky. They look curious to the side of a white boy but still they are humans and are to be pitied by every good and honest man or woman. For they are considered and treated by some people as brutes. It is cruel, and too bad to think of doing, and none but wicked men ever do so. And now boys the way for you to be good boys, and learn to be good men is to obey your parents and they will teach you how to live, to be respected and loved by every body. Now it is tatoo [a signal sounded to summon soldiers to their quarters at night.] and the fifes [small flutes] and drums are making a big noise and soon all will be still an[d] I must go to bed. (page 4) You must excuse me for writing both letters together, and write again to me whenever you feel like it. I am truly your affectionate Uncle Harrison Talbert P.S. We have no Mail route through from this to Union City, only one that we have formed of our own and since I have finished my letter I have learned that very likely my letter will not leave here for a week or two so you need not wonder if it is old when you get it. " Dec" 30th Dear Sister [Louisa, the preacher] After a delay of two or three weeks I seat myself to write a few lines in answer to thine that came to hand in due time and I was sorry indeed to learn that thy health was so delicate; but I hope ere [before] this comes to hand thee will be blest with good health. Thy letter contained the last news I had from thee. Since we left St" Louis I have heard but very little news, have rcvd" but one letter and have not seen a newspaper that contained any news since we left the above named place. We left Union City Tenn" on the 22 ond inst and have been on the march most of the time since and are now only 52 miles from that place. We arrived at this place on the 28th inst and more than likely we will lay here several days. (page 2) I have no idea at present where we are going or what we are going to do. Heretofore it has been the chat that we were going to Jackson Tenn" to offer battle agains[t] Forrest, but deserters from his army report that he has skeedaddled. The part of Tenn that we have been marching through is not half as destitute of the comforts & blessings of life as Mo. The country does not look as though any large force of troops had ever marched through it. Every body appears to have plenty of everything it takes to make them comfortable, but we leave our mark wherever we go, as it is the general aim to live as much as possible off of the rbls. The next morning after Christmas it commenced raining and it made the roads very bad, but upon the whole we got along first rate. (page 3) Louisa; under the present circumstances thee must not look for a letter of much importance, for if so, thee will be disappointed, for I feel but little like writing, and have a very poor chance, but because my letter is short I dont want thee to patronize it, for thy letters are always full of advice and inflamation [information] that I need. Thee could not fill a letter to suit me better if thee was to try ever so hard for I get all the neighborhood news from other sources, and a letter teaching morality and the way to joys eternally in the heavens is of vast importantance to me for I have very poor chances to learn of wisdoms ways and I know I am a poor and needy creature and for a long time I have been traveling a dark road but I fault no one for it but myself. (page 4) For I know I have been living a sluggish life and one far beneath my privilege and duty to live but I am not discouraged in the cause and feel determined to strive onward and upward with the hope of finally gaining an inheritance at the right hand of God; where parting of friends, war and rumors of wars will be no more forever and ever. Me and Frank are both well, hearty and in fine spirits and hope this will find you all the same. Louisa: thee has never said or done anything that affronted me in the least, and on the other hand I am under a thousand obligations to thee for thy kindness etc. from youth, up to the present. Alonzo Myer married Clarissa J Dungan, 67777198, in 1870. Clarissa died in 1906. Meanwhile, Margaret Jane (Jennie) Coverdale, 106948691, married Edgar M Eastman, 98810035, in 1884. Edgar died in 1905, and Jennie married Alonzo in 1907. Alonzo has a memorial, 106948673, in Maplewood Cemetery, Anderson, Madison, IN. The death certificates are available online at ancestry.com.
