Read More	RUSSELL, ALPHEUS ALVIN ALVIN—Alpheus Alvin Russell, son of Samuel J. and Mary Ann Wythers Russell, was born in Madison township, Fillmore county, Nebraska, May 10, 1881. His ancestors were early settlers in Nebraska, his grandfather, for whom he was named, being a Baptist pastor serving the city of Exeter. He attended the country school near his home, receiving the training accorded to the young people with whom he associated as a boy. His mind caught sight of greater opportunities in education which led to further study at the Lincoln School of Commerce, from which he was graduated. He accepted a position with the Nye-Schneider-Fowler Grain Co., serving as agent for the company at Sawyer, Cornelia, David City and Martland. He was united in marriage to Miss Dorethea Mau of Martland, March 16, 1904. Three years after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Russell began farming, the vocation to which they gave most of their active years. Settling on a farm in Geneva township, they began a career which by every measurement could be called successful. His special interest as a farmer centered upon the production of Durcoe Jersey swine. Besides general farming, along with this special interest, Mr. Russell's energy and leadership were invested in many other activities in each one of which he made fine contributions. He was president of the Fillmore County Farmers Mutual Insurance Co., and a trustee of the Geneva Cemetery association. He was elected a member of the Geneva city council in 1927, and served two terms, until 1931. In their home life Mr. and Mrs. Russell walked hand in hand through more than forty-seven years. Three children came to them, one son and two daughters. Loyd C. Russell lives on the home farm near Geneva. A daughter, Mrs. Lula M. Finch, resides in Omaha. Little Doris Mae passed to the life beyond while in infancy. Mr. Russell leaves behind his wife, their son and daughter, three sisters, Mrs. Ruth Taylor and Miss Vera Russell of Minden, Neb., and Mrs. Maude McChesney of Chico, Cal., eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild, also a wide circle of friends. Along with other honors mentioned, Mr. Russell was chosen mayor Geneva in the election held recently. Immediately following, Governor Val Peterson commissioned him an Admiral in the Nebraska Navy. These two honors came to crown with glory the end of this well invested life. He was a member of Masonic Lodge no. 79 of Geneva, and of the First Congregational church, which he served in various official capacities. Beyond these honors lies the fact that Mr. Russell was not only a judicious person, but also a man whose strength, wisdom and sympathies extended to the farthest edge of human need. In his capacity as a welfare officer and as a friend of man, he was ever ready to do what he could for the man who was down. His loyalty to that in which he believed was unwavering, and the person who won his confidence could depend upon his support regardless of the circumstances that arose. His testimony too was clear and definite. He told his loved ones that if death must come, he was ready. He felt that life had been kind to him in that which he had won from it. He felt also that his preparation for the eternal was made, that his faith was secure in the promises of God. With that confidence in his heart and the high approval of all who knew him, Mr. Russsell passed from our midst. The end came peacefully at 1:45 a. m., Monday morning, April 17, 1950, at St. Elizabeth hospital, Lincoln, Neb., being not far from his sixty-ninth birthday. Funeral services are being held at the Geneva Congregational church at 2 p. m. today, Thursday, April 20. The Rev. William G. Bohi conducted the service and Rev. Ben F. Wallace delivered the sermon. Members of the Nebraska board of agriculture acted as pallbearers. Interment was in the Geneva cemetery. The Masonic order will conduct a service at the grave.
