Description	:	Alpheus, or A.R., as he was more familiarly known, was born in New York, parents not yet known, and came to Iowa sometime before 1860. He and his first wife Mary Ann, born Pennsylvania, and their children lived on the Chickasaw Co. farm as shown in the 1860 and 1870 census. No date as when or where he married Mary (maiden name unknown). They had nine children that can be verified. Two died young. Read More	Alpheus, or A.R., as he was more familiarly known, was born in New York, parents not yet known, and came to Iowa sometime before 1860. He and his first wife Mary Ann, born Pennsylvania, and their children lived on the Chickasaw Co. farm as shown in the 1860 and 1870 census. No date as when or where he married Mary (maiden name unknown). They had nine children that can be verified. Two died young. The real estate value on their farm increased from $3840 to $8000 during those ten years. Mary died 20 Jan. 1877,at the age of 48. He then married Ellen Bostwick Hogan, who had moved back to Floyd County from Kansas after the death of her first husband, Dr. William W. Hogan. A.R. and Ellen were married 11 Feb. 1878, this verified by the Floyd Co. marriage records. He was 21 years older. Ellen became instant step-mother to five children. Ellen and A.R. and the children lived on his farm in "Old Chickasaw", in Chickasaw County, Iowa. This is where the Bishop Quarry and limestone kiln is located. During his lifetime, A.R. donated generously to the nearby Little Brown Church at Bradford, now Nashua, Iowa. He died 19 Aug. 1896 and is buried in the Mt. Carroll Cemetery, which was then directly across the road from the farm. The farm no longer exists. He is buried in a plot with his wife Mary and three of their children. Ellen was also buried there after her death in 1916. Ellen continued to manage the farm with the help of a nephew and other family members. (bio by M.Andersen)
