In a note in the St. Marys Star on September 5, 1900, this account was given of her wedding to Fred Leon Smith, a brother of Stephen Oscar Smith, who married her sister, Minnie Estella Hoobler. "Alta Hoobler and Fred Smith were married at the home of the bride's parents last Monday at 10. The ceremony was performed in an impressive manner by Rev. Cook, Maplehill. The groom was attended by his brother, Howard Smith. Mrs. Polly Rutschman was bridesmaid. The happy couple left on the afternoon train for Pennsylvania and the east for a wedding trip. Both are exemplary young people and the "Star" wishes them a long and prosperous and happy wedded life." According to the l905 "Star", Fred and Alta joined the Hoobler family migration to Anselmo, Nebraska, and later moved to Canadian, Texas. Their children were Floyd Leon, who married Gertrude Morris; Ralph Earl, who married Mary Reed; Ray Clarence, whose wife was Ruth Baxter; Dale Hoobler Smith, who married Erlene Elkins; and Bertha Margaret, who married Donald Townsend. In 1976, only Ray was still living, in Greenville, Tennessee. After Alta's death in 1920, Fred took his children, and returned to Pennsylvania. He died June 14,1944, at Mansfield, Pennsylvania, and is buried in the Whitneyville, Pennsylvania cemetery. Alta's death on February 20, 1920 was caused by pneumonia during a "flu" epidemic, which hit the entire family. John and Clarence came from Nebraska to accompany the body back to Moulton Cemetery, Loup County, for burial.
