The family ranched in the canyons of Utah on Willow Creek. Alta and her sister Helen (Johnson) Tomlison attended a one-room school house where their mother taught. After 6th grade they attended school in Vernal, Utah. After high school graduation it was two years before Alta was old enough to enroll in Utah State University in Logan, Utah. She graduated in 1944 with a degree in English and a minor in music. Following graduation Alta's application to work for the FBI was accepted and she moved to Washington D.C. She initially worked as a file clerk at the Justice Department but was quickly promoted to a typist/recorder where she transcribed mail into code. Alta was at work on April 12, 1945 when the employees learned that President Franklin D Roosevelt had died. She was part of the crowds who watched President Roosevelt's caisson move down the street in Washington DC. Alta was also present on the crowd-lined street on August 15, 1945, V-J Day, when Imperial Japan surrendered in World War II. These events added to her lifelong love for her country. In mid-September, 1945, Alta's FBI job ended and she returned to Vernal, Utah to immediately begin teaching at Vernal High School. After teaching two years she married Virgil R Matlack. They began 35+ years following the oil patch in the mid-western United States. The couple made Sterling their home where they raised three children. Alta was active in Zonta International and was a volunteer for Logan County Hospital. She dedicated herself to her home, her children's varied activities, her gardening and her faith. She and her husband were charter members of Calvary Baptist Church where they lived their faith until Virg's Testers and Sterling Machine and Speciality were purchased by Baker International Oil in the 1980s and they moved to Denver. Alta enjoyed Denver's cultural events and being a tour guide at the historical Molly Brown House. Always ready for a new adventure, Alta, her daughters, sons-in-law and two granddaughters participated in the annual Bolder Boulder 10K run/walk event in 2018. Being pushed in a patriotic theme decorated red wheelchair, Alta cruised through the course winning first place in her age group (96 and above) and overall oldest participant. Along with being a Sunday School teacher for grade school girls, Set Free Prison Ministry was a focus of Alta's Christian life. She met with the Set Free Ministry Team weekly to write encouragement and spiritual guidance through Bible correspondence courses received from Colorado prisons' inmates. Alta was a bright spiritual beacon to all she encountered. Alta most enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She and Virgil traveled all over the mid-west, southern and eastern United States to visit family. International travel was their second passion. They toured all over the world until Virgil's death in 2005 after 58 years of marriage. Alta is survived by her children Fred Matlack {Vivian} of Houston, Texas, Virgie Nelson {Gary} of Sterling, CO and Kathy Hobbs {Virgil} of Aurora Colorado, eight grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and her adored cat Mattie. Memorial donations may be made to Set Free Prison Ministries or The Denver Hospice both sent in care of Tennant Funeral Home, PO Box 1547, Sterling, CO.
