Daughter of Charles Benjamin Henry Weeks and Alta Ruth Killian OBITUARY THE CHARITON HERALD-PATRIOT Chariton, Iowa Thursday, May 19, 2011 ALTA RUTH SMALL Alta Ruth Weeks Small, age 91, of Chariton, Iowa passed away Sunday, May 1, 2011 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. Ruth was born on April 23, 1920 in Deep River, Iowa to Charles and Alta Weeks. Ruth graduated from Millersburg High School. After high school, Ruth was a school teacher, where she taught in a little country school. She was thought of fondly by all her students, whom she loved as if they were her own. Ruth traveled by train to Marysville, California to meet the love of her life, Marvin LaVaughn Small, who was serving in the military. On July 17, 1943 Ruth and LaVaughn were happily married. She and her husband traveled all over the United States, living in various places while he served in the Army. Ruth was a cashier, working in a dime store and also taught school. After her husband got out of the Army they moved to Delta, Iowa where they farmed. Ruth quit teaching to help on the farm. They then moved to Sigourney, Iowa and later to Chariton, Iowa where they made their permanent residence. Ruth's family and friends meant the world to her. She and her husband of 67 years loved their time spent together. She deeply mourned the loss of her loving husband two short months ago. Her health began to deteriorate shortly after. Now they are at peace and happily reunited forever in heaven. Ruth is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Richard Nunemaker of Hiawatha, nieces, nephews and many other relatives and dear friends. Preceding her in death was her husband LaVaughn; parents, Charles and Alta Weeks; mother and father-in-law, June and Peter Small; brothers, Lester, Charles, George "Bud" and Leroy Weeks; brother-in-law, Wes Dloughly; sisters, Hannah Weeks and Loretta Dloughly, several aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 5, 2011 with Pastors Linda O'Connell and Sara Palmer officiating. Interment was in the Zion Cemetery near Williamson. Pallbearers were Roger Wessel, Bob Delpierre, Allan Nunemaker, Dennis Clinton, Randy Mundy and Terry DeVore. Obituary courtesy of Charles M. Wright
