Burial will be in the Utterback Cemetery, Riverton, Iowa. Altha Mae Beam was born February 5, 1923, in Riverton, the daughter of Sidney and Hazel (Dickerson) Beam. She grew up on farms near Riverton, Strahan, Climax and Coburg. She graduated from Coburg High School in 1940. She began working at Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in Shenandoah. She then moved to Omaha, Nebraska and went to art school and worked at Kilpatricks and at an auto parts store. She then became a receptionist and phone operator at the Methodist Hospital. She married Randy Laabs on February 6, 1955, at the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Shenandoah. They were the parents of daughter Diane Rose Laabs, but died on December 5, 1955 in Fairmont, Minnesota. They moved to Vernon Center, Minnesota, until they purchased an acreage near Madelia, Minnesota in 1963, and ran an auction barn they owned. After she and Randy divorced, she moved to Shenandoah in 1969. She worked at Henry Fields, Garden View, Woolworths and Hy-Vee, where she retired in 2000. She became a resident of Elm Heights Care Center in 2018. She was a member of First Christian Church. She enjoyed traveling, cooking, baking, sewing quilts, painting, art and making ceramics. Above all, she loved the time she spent with her family and friends. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Surviving are three sons, Roger (Dorothy) Laabs, Greg (Elicia) Laabs and Jeff (Lisa) Laabs; seven grandchildren, Justin Laabs, Jason Laabs, Heather (Laabs) Loutzenhiser, Ryan Mahoney, Luke Mahoney, Bradley Bye and Michael Harriman; six great-grandchildren, Magnus Laabs, Zoey Loutzenhiser, William Loutzenhiser, Autumn Harriman, Layla Bye and Micah Bye; one brother, Leo Beam; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Diane Laabs, two sisters, Alice Johnson and Dorothy Beam, one sister-in-law, Clara Beam and one brother-in-law, Ray Johnson.
