Cullen, prominent business man, formerly of Crisfield but for the past five years a resident of Warwick, Va., died suddenly at his home there on Sunday, following a heart attack. He was 62 years of age. Born in Crisfield, he was the son of Mrs. Olive Cullen of Hampton, Va., and the late George Cullen, Sr., of Crisfield. For more than thirty years Mr. Cullen was engaged in the ice manufacturing business here, first as an employee of the old Crisfield Ice Manufacturing Company, which was purchased by the Consumers Ice Manufacturing Company in 1918. Mr. Cullen remained with the Consumers until it was in turn purchased by Mr. A. Wellington Tawes, who ran the business under the name of Tawes Ice Company, with Mr. Cullen playing an important role, Mr. Tawes then sold the business to Mr. Cullen and Mr. Albert Hayman, who operated the business for several years. The Consumers Ice Manufacturing Company was also engaged in furnishing electricity to the community, in the same plant where the ice was made, and also engaged in the cold storage business. The Eastern Shore Public Service Company bought the property, managed the electric part, and rented the ice facilities. The Public Service Company, about 1960, sold the property to the Packers Ice Company, and Mr. Cullen then left the city and opened Cullen's Crown Service Station in Newport News, moving there and operating it for the past five years. A man of high integrity and of keen business acumen, Mr. Cullen had been successful is his business ventures. He was a modest man, with a warm heart, very friendly and enjoyed the high regard and esteem of everyone who knew him. He had been an active member of Asbury Methodist Church here and continued his church activities with the First Methodist Church in Warwick, Va. His death came as a great shock to his relatives and his many friends in this community. Funeral services were held in Asbury Methodist Church at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. Frank A. Baker. Interment was in the Asbury Cemetery. Surviving him are his mother, his widow, Mrs. Louise Sterling Cullen, two sons, Alton E. Cullen of Warwick, Va., and Richard C. Cullen of Oxford, Ohio, two sisters, Mrs. Harold Tawes of Hampton, Va., and Mrs. Clyde Walker of El Segundo, Calif., one brother, George T. Cullen, Jr., of Crisfield, and one grandchild.
