Pruitt, one of the community's best known citizens, who had been an invalid for the past two years, died at his home on State street Wednesday morning, at the age of 58 years. He was the son of the late John W. and Ella Pruitt, and was related to several of the most prominent families in the community. Mr. Pruitt had not been well for several years, and for about two years had been confined to his home under the care of his physician. His death, although not entirely unexpected, came as a shock to relatives and friends. Early in life Mr. Pruitt became a sail maker's apprentice. He learned the art thoroughly and became known as one of the best designers and makers of boat sails, and worker in canvas goods, on the east coast. He worked in several of the large cities on the coast, where real craftsmanship was necessary to successfully hold the business of equipping sailing craft with sails, hatch covers, tarpaulins, etc. Then some years ago he came back to Crisfield and opened a "sail loft," went into the business of making canvas sails and other articles of canvas, on his own account. He succeeded in this business because he knew it thoroughly, took great pride in turning out high grade work, and was a hard worker. In 1941, with Mr. Wallace M. Quinn, he set up a factory to make tents for the U.S. Government. The concern did such a good job on its first contract for squad tents that it soon was awarded other contracts, most of them under competitive bidding. Being thoroughly familiar with all types of canvas work, Mr. Pruitt was able to train his employee quickly, and during and until the end of World War II, the Pruitt plant on Locust street was in almost steady production of various types of tents for the U.S. Army. While he had been suffering before, it was in 1945 that Mr. Pruitt had to give up his work and stay at home. And since that time he gradually grew worse until the end came. He had a host of friends in the community, because in prosperity or adversity he was always the same, ready to help a good cause or those in need, interested in good citizenship, liking his fellowmen and being liked in return. He was indeed a fine citizen. Funeral services will be hed today, Friday afternoon at 2.30 o'clock at his home on State street, conducted by Rev. Elmer L. Bennett. Interment will be in the family lot in Crisfield cemetery. Bearers will be Major C. Todd, George Todd, William S. Sterling, Roger Sterling, Charles W. Howeth and Edwin Tawes. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. India C. Pruitt, one daughter, Mrs. Lionel Daugherty, and three sons, Jack A., Robert L., and Edwin E. Pruitt, all of this city, one brother, Lybrand Pruitt of Alexandria, Va., and two sisters, Mrs. Elyard Holland and Mrs. Benjamin F. Gibson, both of Crisfield, and three grandchildren.
