His mother left the home when Alvey was a young child and he was raised by his Father and paternal Grandmother, his parents divorcing when he was 7 yrs old. Returning to Maine he finished his schooling and assisted... Read More	My grandfather Alva L. Huckins was born in Marion a small town in Washington County, Maine. His mother left the home when Alvey was a young child and he was raised by his Father and paternal Grandmother, his parents divorcing when he was 7 yrs old. He went to school in Marion and Dennysville Maine. He visited his mother in his early teens one summer and formed a strong attachment to his mother, grandmother, and his Aunts and cousins during this visit that remained lifelong. Returning to Maine he finished his schooling and assisted his grandfather Huckins with dairy farming. When his grandfather died, Alva then a young man of 25, went to live with his mother who had remarried a few years earlier and moved to New Hampshire. He always looked back fondly on that time with his mother and his new "sister" and his favorite Aunt Abbie and extended families. During that time he worked as a teamster transporting logs from the woods to the mills. Around the time his mother died in 1908 he met and later married Agnes Macaulay born and raised in Scotland and who had come to Sanbornton NH with her family a few years prior. Alva and Agnes moved to Portsmouth NH when they married. Two children were born of this union, Leander and Robert, my dad. In 1913 they returned to Sanbornton and later moved to Tilton when the children reached school age. Alva developed severe allergies being around horses and the family moved to Watertown Massachusetts in 1921 in order that Alva could attend school and receive his certificate as a stationary engineer. He had some musical ability and played violin at gatherings as well. In the 1930 census in Watertown Massachusetts Alva was age 54, working as a stationary engineer. Wife Agnes was 50 and children Leander was 18 and Robert 15. After he lost the sight in one eye from a spark from a boiler and the children had completed high school, the family moved back to New Hampshire in 1932. A short time later he again became ill again with asthma and he and Agnes moved in with his newly married son Robert and wife. They were renting on the property where Alva's mother and grandmother had resided. Alva died a year later at the age of 64 from chronic nephritis. Agnes continued to live with her son Robert until her last illness in their newly built home in Meredith. Agnes died about 20 years after her husband in 1958. Alva was buried in the Macaulay lot in Park Cemetery in Tilton NH, FS Shepherd, undertaker. From newspaper article, Alva was remembered at his funeral as a man who was a loyal friend and neighbor, a loving son and grandson, and a stern but never harsh father. In spite of his hard life he was kind to all and of good spirit.
