Description	:	Agnes was named after her paternal grandmother Agnes Hay. She came to the US with her parents and siblings when she was 25 yrs old. She was a city girl and feeling quite isolated in the woods of NH when the family moved there from Massachussetts but she learned to garden, lead a horse and chop wood. This is how she met her husband-to-be when he was coming up the dirt road and stopped to admire her chopping wood. She came to the US with her parents and siblings when she was 25 yrs old. She was a city girl and feeling quite isolated in the woods of NH when the family moved there from Massachussetts but she learned to garden, lead a horse and chop wood. This is how she met her husband-to-be when he was coming up the dirt road and stopped to admire her chopping wood. She lived on Eastman Hill in Sanbornton NH, a short distance from where he lived in Hermit Woods. She married Alva L. Huckins in 1910 Sanbornton, NH. They made their home in Tilton/Northfield on Park Street moving to Watertown Mass and returning to New Hampshire some years later. After the death of her husband, Agnes made her home with her son Robert Macaulay Huckins in North Sanbornton and later Meredith NH until shortly before her death in 1958. She was as short as her husband was tall, barely reaching 4' 11" with curly chestnut hair and eyes of blue. She was quiet and well mannered. Her only sadness was never returning to her homeland across the sea to visit with her brother who stayed behind as well as her many friends there. She lost a younger brother and sister when she was two and always spoke of wanting to see their graves one more time even though she did not remember them. Her brother Joseph and her favorite nephew Johnnie Johnston both visited her from Scotland a couple times. I remember my grandmother as a tiny woman who was always smiling with a long braid of white hair wrapped around her head. Obit: Mrs. Alva L. Huckins 78, widow of Alva, died at a Laconia nursing home Thursday evening after a long illness (stroke). She was a native of Scotland and had lived in Tilton and Sanbornton and spent the past 18 years with her son Robert Huckins in Meredith New Hampshire. Members of the family included another son Leander of Brandon Vermont, four grandchildren, a brother Charles Macaulay of Sanbornton and several nieces and nephews. Services were held at the Shepherd Funderal home Sunday afternoon with Rev Edwin A. Olson pastor of the Congregational church officiate. Burial was in the Park Cemetery.
