P. Jarvis met his death by being thrown from a boat and was drowned....After the Loup bridge went out Sunday night Mr. Jarvis and Ed Watts at once began making arrangements to put in a ferry boat for the transportation of passengers across the river. Tuesday morning Mr. Jarvis took his boat and went to the river to begin the work of carrying people back and forward across the stream which was very high and contained a great deal of floating ice and timbers. He had made several successful trips across in the forenoon, but about noon he came across with Matt Leach and Mr. Leach reports several narrow escapes on the trip, as soon as Mr. Leach was landed on this side of the river, Mr. Jarvis started back to the other side, but when within a few rods of the opposite side, his boat capsized, but he managed to get on top of the boat and floated down the river until he reached the bridge, a distance of probably a quarter of a mile, here he struck the swift current and his boat got away from him and he disappeared before any assistance could reach him.... He has for many years followed the occupation of painting an paper hanging. Mr. Jarvis was chief of the Fire Department and has been a member of that institution ever since its organization in 1895... He leaves a wife and five children to mourn his untimely loss....[many details of accident and search for his body].... The body of A. P. Jarvis was found last Friday on a sand bar in the Loup opposite the Kent ranch.... Alvah P. Jarvis, born in Iowa March 11th, 1865 and was drowned March 10th, 1903, lacking just one day of being 38 years old. He had been a resident of this county for 20 years and of Fullerton for 14. He leaves a wife and five children..... The family of the deceased is thrown upon the world with no provision for their support, without so much as a dollar in money and a heavy incumberance on the home and it is up to the people of this city to extend the helping hand, assist them in this their doubly sad bereavement....Contributions may be left at this office or handed to Dr. J. F. Johnson, who has the matter in charge.... The body was buried at 10 o'clock Saturday morning under the direction of the fire department, but the funeral services did not take place until Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock...The fire department turned out in a body....
