Alvah Shelden, for thirty years editor and owner of the Walnut Valley Times, died Sunday evening at 9:40, at the family residence, 208 Mechanic street. Mr. Shelden had been confined to his home with sickness since early in the summer. His condition was never hopeful and the past week his family realized that the end was near. Alvah Shelden was born in Wisconsin in 1849. While yet a young boy his parents moved to Texas. His father was assassinated because of his free state views. After his death the family responsibilities rested in a great measure upon the shoulders of the eldest son, Alvah. Shortly after the death of the father, the family removed to Kansas and for a time made their home in the vicinity of Chelsea. Later they moved to Paris, Ill., where they lived for eight years and until then returned to Kansas and located on the south fork of the Cottonwood. The next year they came to Chelsea and homesteaded a claim. Alvah Shelden remained on the farm and assisted his mother to rear the family. He was an ambitious young man and when he could be spared from the farm work, made a trip through the Indian Territory, Texas and Arkansas. He did not find a suitable location and returned to El Dorado and accepted a position in the El Dorado Exchange bank. While in the employe of the bank he was elected county superintendent of Butler county and held the office for four years. Before he retired from office, however, he was appointed to the postmastership of El Dorado. March 1, 1881, he purchased the Walnut Valley Times from the late Thomas Benton Murdock, who went to Topeka to become one of the editorial writers on the Topeka Commonwealth. Mr. Shelden remained at the helm until March 1, 1911, when he sold his paper to his only son, Chester, who now conducts the paper. January 1, 1877, Alvah Shelden was married to Miss May Lamb of Douglass. To this union five children were born, four who survive their father, Miss Bernice, having preceding her father about eight years ago. Besides the bereaved mother, Mrs. Henry Sandifer, Chester, Mrs. Lee Scott and Miss Marjorie, mourn the loss of a loving and indulgent husband and father. Mr. Shelden also leaves two brothers and two sisters viz: John Shelden, Ft. Scott; Marion Shelden, Topeka; Mrs. Tom Mantor, Arkansas City, and Mrs. Farnsworth of El Dorado. Mr. Shelden became a Mason in October 28, 1875. He was also a Knight of Pythias and a member of the Knight and Ladies of Security. Mr. Shelden had made a success of life and had gathered about him considerable of this world's goods. The passing of Alvah Shelden means that a pioneer has gone and one who will be sadly missed by his many friends. He was big hearted and loyal to his friends. By many he was misunderstood and his act often misconstrued, thus were formed false impressions and enemies that were often groundless. His ability as a writer when at his desk is well known. The bereaved wife and children have the heartfelt sympathy of Butler county. May their burden of sorrow be lightened by the many kind offers of condolence that will come to them through the death of their father, Alvah Shelden. Funeral services over the remains of the late Alvah Shelden will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 from the family residence at 208 Mechanic street.
