The spirit of Berenice Barbara Shelden, the 17 year old daughter, who has been in Colorado Springs, with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alvah Shelden, for some months, took its flight to the God who gave it, at 3:30 p.m., Friday. The remains accompanied by the parents, and three sisters, Myrtle, Lida Lou and Marjorie, will arrive on the Santa Fe Sunday evening. "Whoseover liveth and believeth in me shall never die." All that is mortal of Berenice Barbara Shelden - her identity, her spirit having, on Friday last, taken its flight to God who gave it - arrived here, accompanied by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alvah Shelden and sisters, Myrtle, Lia Lou and Marjorie, Monday, by the Santa Fe, the funeral cortage going directly from the upper station to the family home. Dr. Curtis, of Caldwell, formerly Presbyterian minister here, will preach the funeral sermon, the obsequies being conducted from the home, on Mechanic street, at nine thirty o'clock, Tuesday. The little siter is no longer here. The young life, the hopeful, happy spirit, the comfort and joy of the household, has responded to the call; and as there can be no waiting after death, has joined the others, who have gone on before. The deceased was born in El Dorado, her entire life being spent here. She will be missed by her associates and friends, and by her school companions, but most of all she will be missed at home. May a merciful Providence give solace to sorrowing friends, peace and consolation to the bereaved family. All that was earthly of Berenice Barbara Shelden was placed in its resting place, in the family lot in Belle Vista cemetery, Tuesday, Rev. Curtis, of Caldwell, conducted the funeral services, which are held from the home of the parents, at 9:30 Tuesday morning. Many beautiful floral offerings, among which were two harps, a cross, a heart, several wreaths and many bouquets, gave token of the love and esteem held for the departed friend and the sympathy for the bereaved family. The Junior Pastime girls, Mabel Sinclair, Olive Clifford, Susan Pattison, Pearl McMullen, Edna Dodge, Winifred Weller, Allene Schumacher, Marion Overstreet, Lela Harris and Mary Esther Tolle acted as flower girls. Everett Palmer, George Benson, Roy Case, Harry Tolle, Charles Ellet and Hugh Hamilton acted as pall bearers. A large number attended the services, but as Berenice had requested that only relatives and intimate friends should be allowed to see her after death, only a few viewed the remains. At about half past ten, the funeral procession, one of the largest ever assembled here, followed the remains to the grave. (transcribed by Judy Mayfield)
