James Chappel officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery in Monticello. Alva Onken, rural Monticello, died March 10 at his home. Alve Dedric Onken was born on July 17, 1916 in Monticello, the son of Eilt and Emma Dirks Onken. He was raised and educated in Wayne Township. In 1939 he married Leona Kleitsch in Cascade. The couple farmed in the Sand Springs area before moving on to their home farm south of Monticello in 1945. They retired in 1984 and continued to live on the farm. Mr. Onken was a member of the Coronary Primary Prevention Trial (lipid research) in Iowa City. He is survived by his wife, Leona; a son, Roger A. Onken of Monticello; four daughters, Carol Ridenour of Marion, Agnes Webber of Phoenix, Ariz., Linda Jones of Gering, Neb. And Patsy Rhatigan of Cedar Rapids; 14 grandchildren; one great-grandson; a sister, Verna Pelisek of Cedar Rapids; and a brother, Henry Onken of Anamosa. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Loretta; and two brothers, Herman and Clarence. Casket bearers were John Janssen, Harry Dierks, Lyle Topbiason, Dale C. Mueller, Lawrence Rieken and Robert Gerdes. The Devaney Funeral Home of Monticello was in charge of arrangements.
