While in high school he participated in sports,... Read More	Alvern Bunjer, who grew up in Lennox, died at his home in Omaha, Nebraska on Wednesday, March 9 after a valiant battle with cancer. He attained the age of 79 years, nine months and seven days. Alvern Marvin Bunjer was born on May 30, 1925 in Lennox, SD, the second of three children of Harry and Dena (Naatjes) Bunjer. He grew up on a farm north of Lennox, enjoying many outdoor activities and playing his guitar when his busy farm schedule allowed. He graduated from Lennox High School with the class of 1943. While in high school he participated in sports, music and other school activities. In December of 1943, Alvern joined the Army Air Corps. Following completion of his stateside training, he was based in England as a member of the 493rd Bomb Group, a unit of the Eighth Air Force. Assigned to flying duties as a member of a B-17 bomber crew, Alvern served both as a tail gunner and a turret gunner, completing 35 missions over Germany, France and Holland during the war. He was decorated with two battle stars on his air campaign ribbon and was awarded the Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters. At the completion of his 35 missions, he was transferred back to the U.S. in May of 1945, and was honorably discharged from the service in September of that year. Alvern returned home to Lennox to resume farming with his family. In May of 1947 he married Joyce Grayson, also of Lennox. Immediately following their marriage, they moved to Vermillion where Alvern enrolled at the University of South Dakota. Majoring in business administration, he graduated in three years, earning his bachelor of science degree in May of 1950. Upon graduation from college, Alvern selected employment with Armour and Company in Omaha. Beginning his career as a salesman, he received various promotions within the beef department in both Omaha and Sioux City, Iowa where the family lived for a time. At the time of his retirement, from the company in December of 1985, Alvern was general manager of the Armour plant in Omaha and had completed over 35 years of service with the same firm. In addition to enjoying hunting, fishing and all types of outdoor activities, Alvern and Joyce spent their retirement years busily collecting and working with antiques, traveling to antique shows throughout the Midwest. Alvern was preceded in death by his parents and an older brother, Harold. He is survived by his wife, Joyce; three sons: Verl and wife Nancy, Gary and wife Susan, Dennis and wife Rogene; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; his brother, Raymond and wife Deloris.
