Description	:	QUIMBY, Iowa -- Alvin A. Volkert, 91, of Quimby passed away peacefully Thursday morning, Jan. 26, 2012, at Cherokee Villa Nursing and Rehab Center in Cherokee, Iowa. Services were 10:30 a.m. Monday at Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Quimby. The Rev. Don Meyer and Vicar Scot Kerns officiated. Burial was in Quimby Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Quimby American Legion. Alvin was born Aug. 24, 1920, to Edmund and Alma (Keller) Volkert in Douglas Township, rural Cushing, Iowa. He attended school in Douglas Township and Fielding through the eighth grade. He joined the U.S. Army on Feb. 2, 1942. He served until he was honorably discharged on Oct. 17, 1945. After arriving in France, he fought in Belgium, the Battle of the Bulge and across Germany until V-E Day, where he lost two tanks and was wounded. After returning to the U.S.A., he was awarded several medals including the Purple Heart. Alvin was united in marriage on Jan. 8, 1954, to Erma Tamm at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee. He was a lifetime farmer and caretaker of three cemeteries for many years with Erma. He retired in 1990 and moved off the farm in 1996 to live in Quimby. He was a member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Quimby, where he served as an elder, treasurer, finance secretary and Sunday School superintendent. He was also a member of the Washta (Iowa) American Legion and the 707th Tank Battalion Association. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, pool, horseshoes, playing cards, and taking the family to the Iowa Great Lakes. Alvin is survived by his loving wife, Erma of Quimby; two sons, Ardell Volkert of Cherokee, and Larry Volkert of Cherokee; eight grandchildren, Steven (Emily) Volkert of Blair, Neb., Rebecca Carey and special friend, Eric of Blair, Danny Volkert and special friend, Christa of St. Roberts, Mo., Travis (Natalia) Sipes of Waterloo, Iowa, Chad (Kendra) Mitchell of Cherokee, Cory Volkert of Cherokee, Nicholas Volkert of Cherokee, Alexander Volkert of Cherokee; 12 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Wanda (Paul) Samuelson of Aurelia, Iowa, Freida (Wilbert) Vohs of Holstein, Iowa, Carolyn (Jim) Young of Galva, Iowa, and Janet (Lorne) Hahn of Aurelia; sister-in-law, Barbara Volkert and her special friend, Robert Compton of Cherokee; and several nieces, nephews, and many friends.
