Read More	Holstein Quasquicentennial 1882-2007 Book: Edmund John Volkert was born January 21, 1895, on a farm north of Cushing to George and Anna (Hummel) Volkert. He grew up on the farm, working hard as a youth, and attended country school through the winter months. Ed was drafted in the Army in World War I, and he fought in France where he was wounded and spent many months in the hospital before he was discharged. On December 24, 1919, he married Alma Keller, daughter of Gustaf and Inga Marie (Oleson) Keller of Correctionville, at the Lutheran parsonage in Holstein. They began farming north of Cushing in 1920. They raised corn, oats and livestock. They raised and dressed geese and rabbits and shipped them to Chicago. In 1932 they moved to a farm three miles southwest of Fielding in Cherokee County. These were dry years, and they dried out two or three years in a row. Ed and his son Alvin dug seven wells before they found water. In 1935 they purchased a farm six miles north and two west of Holstein. Later they purchased 40 acres from Karl Ewoldt that was adjacent to their land. They had an ice house in the grove north of their house and in the winter Ed, with the help of neighbor men, went to the river and cut blocks of ice and stored it in layers of saw dust in the ice house. They had ice all summer for the icebox and had homemade ice cream every Sunday. On July 4, 1936, a neighborhood picnic was held at their place. It was so windy and hot it was over 100 degrees that day. The lawn burned up and the crops withered. They drank a 30-gallon crock of lemonade. The kids played games and ran races. The adults visited and tried to keep cool. Ed and Alma were parents of two sons and four daughters. Alvin of Quimby married Erma Tamm; Wanda of Aurelia married Paul Samuelson; Frieda of Holstein married Wilbert Vohs; Carolyn of Galva married James Young; Paul of Quimby married Barbara Campbell; and Janet of Aurelia married Laren Hahn. Paul Volkert died October 2, 1994 of cancer Ed and Alma lived on the farm until their deaths. They are buried at Memory Gardens, Cherokee, IA.
