Description	:	Alvin Clayton Dowd, son of Nathan and Laura Dowd was born in Jefferson County, Kansas, August 7, 1860 and passed away in his home in Moravia, July 2, 1938 at the age of 77 years, 10 months and 25 days. While still a small child he moved with his parents to Jefferson County, Iowa. later moving to Wapello county where the family resided for a number of years. Read More	Alvin Clayton Dowd, son of Nathan and Laura Dowd was born in Jefferson County, Kansas, August 7, 1860 and passed away in his home in Moravia, July 2, 1938 at the age of 77 years, 10 months and 25 days. While still a small child he moved with his parents to Jefferson County, Iowa. later moving to Wapello county where the family resided for a number of years. He was married to Laura Louella Smith, August 26, 1886 at Bloomfield, Iowa. He took a claim in western Nebraska and soon after his marriage he and his bride moved to this claim near Chambers, Nebraska, making the trip in a covered wagon. Ten years later they returned to Iowa and lived on a farm near Blakesburg until 1918 when they moved to Moravia where he has since made his home. Eight children were born to this union, six of whom survive their father: a son, Clarence of Moravia; five daughters, Mrs Ethel Gardner and Mrs Daisy Donahoo of Moravia, Mrs Edna Miller and Helen of Ottumwa, and Hazel who resides at home. Mr. Dowd and his wife were devoted parents, not only to their own family, but to a motherless boy, Marion Davis, whom shared their home and love. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Alvin, Wanda and Delbert Donahoo, Marvin Gardner, Donald and Delmar Dowd; as sister, Mrs. Augusta Thorpe of Brandenton, Florida; two brothers, Benjamin F. Dowd of Long Beach, California and Jesse Dowd of Sioux City, Iowa; besides other relatives and friends. He was predeceased in death by his wife, who died March 1 of this year. a son, Daniel, who died in service in the World War; a daughter, Mrs. Edith Blair in 1934; also two grandchildren; his parents, two sisters and five brothers. For several years Mr. Dowd was engaged in the grocery business in Moravia operating what was then known as the West End Grocery. He was converted in early manhood later uniting with the Methodist church at Prairie Chapel. After moving to Moravia he transferred his membership to the Methodist church at this place, where he remained a faithful member until death. Mr. Dowd was so devoted to his wife that after her death four months ago, he seemed unable to survive the shock, and during his illness he expressed his desire to be at peace. His parting words to his wife at her passing were "I'll meet you inside the Pearly Gate". Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Moravia at 2p.m. Tuesday, July 5, conducted by Rev. Chas. L. Ellis. Music was furnished by Mrs. Eva Firkias and Forest Main, with Mrs. Fred Blumenstock at the piano. Interment at the Moravia cemetery.
