As a young man he moved with his family to a farm north of Valley Springs, SD. Alvin graduated from Valley Springs High School in 1950 and continued with farming work. Alvin was united in marriage with LaVerne Lewis on the Lewis farm near Valley Springs on July 3, 1951. The couple farmed in the Valley Springs area. In 1962 they moved to a farm in Minnesota east of Valley Springs. They moved to their present farm south of Valley Springs in 1970. Alvin was a member of Valley Springs Reformed Church where he was a member of the Consistory for over 30 years and taught young people through the Kids for Christ program. Through the years he served on the Pleasant View Cemetery Board and the Valley Springs Community Club. Alvin took pride in his farm and home. He enjoyed gardening and tending to the flowers he planted every year. At Christmas time, his lighting displays became the stuff of legends. Above all, Alvin cherished his family. He especially doted on his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved attending all the activities they were involved in. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, LaVerne; three children, Keith Scholten and his wife, Kathy, Sue Hughes and her husband, Gene and Cindy Moss and her husband, Carl, all of Valley Springs, SD; eight grandchildren, Lisa Hove and her husband, Kory, Kelly Scholten and his wife, Stacy, Jason Rentschler, Kyle Scholten and his wife, Char, Amy Moss, Angela Danielson and her husband, Rick, Kory Scholten and Staci Moss; 10 great-grandchildren, Lindsey, Kelsey, Kayla, Zachary, Thomas, Jack, Kaden, Samuel, Kianna, James; three siblings, Milton Scholten and his wife, MarLene, Valley Springs, SD, Marlys Snyders and her husband, Dick, Larchwood, IA, Kenneth Scholten and his wife, Judy, Houston, TX; and a host of other relatives and friends. Alvin was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Kathryn Elofson.
