Nissen July 30, 1925 - December 13, 2007 Alvin J. Nissen, 82, of Miller, died Thursday, December 13, 2007 at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Memorial services were held Saturday, Dec. 22 at First United Methodist Church in Miller with the Rev. David Andrews officiating. Alvin James Nissen was born July 30, 1925 in Faulk County, S.D. He was the son of John and Hilda (Juries) Nissen. He attended elementary and high school at Orient, SD. Alvin entered military service March 1944 in the U.S. Army, and served his country during World War II in Italy, France and Germany. He received an Honorable Discharge in June 1946. On January, 16, 1949, he was united in marriage to Eva Melber at the United Methodist Church in Miller, where they established their home together for 59 years, and were blessed with five children. Alvin's first business venture was buying a Dairy Queen franchise and building a drive-in where the Ranch Caf now stands. Later, he was owner and operator of the Nissen Motor Co., a Ford, Lincoln and Mercury dealership in Miller. He retired in 1984, and he and Eva started a craft business, which they enjoyed until the time of his death. The new business provided opportunities to travel throughout the U.S. in their motor home, making many new friends along the way. Alvin was an active member of the United Methodist Church, serving on various boards. He served as president of the Kiwanis Club, and was a life member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Family was an important part of Alvin's life. He never missed an opportunity to watch his children or grandchildren in their various activities, and traveled many miles to cheer them on. Alive was an accomplished handyman, and enjoyed many projects not only at their farm at Miller, but at their children's homes as well. He was a friendly, fun loving person, and enjoyed making many new friends as he and Eva traveled. He truly lived life to the fullest, sharing his love and joy to anyone he met. Anyone whom he encountered was truly better for the experience. He was deeply loved by his family and friends, and will be missed tremendously. Survivors include his wife, Eva, of Miller; five children, Alan (Roxanne) and their two children, Connor and Paige, of Lincoln, Neb., Vicki (Bill) Hawn of Eau Claire, Wis., and their four children, Kimberly (AJ) Wright of Denver, Colo., and Mark, Matthew, Christina and grandson Carson, of Eau Claire, Wis., Rick (Nancy) and their three children, Jayme, Elizabeth, and Emily of Maple Grove, Minn., Shelly Nissen and her husband Chuck, and two children, John and Nicole, of Benicia, Calif., and Lori Nissen and her husband Tim and their four children, Jessica, Jake, Lauren, and Grace of Edina, Minn.; two brothers, Jack of Auburn, Wash. and Dick (Janize) of Delta Junction, Ala.; sister-in-law Ruby Nissen of Piedmont, S.D.; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Alvie was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Gordon, Bill and Marvin Nissen. Reck Funeral Home of Miller has been entrusted with arrangements. The Miller Press 12/26/2007
