Description	:	ALVIN JOSEPH BURKE was born July 20, 1909, in Mansfield, SD, to William Charles and Alma Pauline (Lee) Burke and was the third oldest of ten children. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Stratford, SD. On June 5, 1941, Alvin was united in marriage with Doris Leone Harmel at St. Paul's Lutheran Church of McIntosh. Read More	ALVIN JOSEPH BURKE was born July 20, 1909, in Mansfield, SD, to William Charles and Alma Pauline (Lee) Burke and was the third oldest of ten children. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Stratford, SD. On June 5, 1941, Alvin was united in marriage with Doris Leone Harmel at St. Paul's Lutheran Church of McIntosh. Earl Engebretson and Dorothy Burke were their attendants. The marriage was blessed with two children, Darrel Leon and Lila Marie. Alvin led a very active and interesting life. In 1918, the family moved to Gopher, SD where Alvin farmed with his parents until 1936. He moved to Isabel and worked for the South Dakota Department of Transportation. In 1938, Alvin began employment with Bill Lund and O'Laughlin at the Isabel elevator. In 1939, he began working for Dave Unterseher at the gas station. In 1942, Alvin and Bill Scholl purchased the Phillips 66 station. In 1944, Alvin purchased the station, which he then operated alone until 1954 when he sold the station to his brother. In 1954, Alvin also purchased the Ed Hirsch Trucking business. In 1966, he sold the Fuel Bulk Plant to Harold Locken. In 1977, Alvin retired from trucking and was blessed with a long and fruitful retirement. He was a faithful member of Peace Lutheran Church of Isabel, SD. Alvin loved music. He could play the violin, piano, the various saxophones, and the woodwinds. He played in 23 different bands during his life, two of them being the Dakota Travelers and the band Altones, with his children Darrel and Lila playing in the band for a number of years. Alvin played for broadcast over the radio and was privileged to play for the Governor's Inauguration Ball. He had an acquaintance with Lawrence Welk in his earlier years. Alvin loved good music. During his retirement he enjoyed visiting friends and neighbors at the Isabel Cafe and at the filling stations. Alvin enjoyed his friends at Gillette while they all conversed and played bingo. Alvin and his brother Marcus enjoyed many hour together pitching horseshoes. He will be missed. Alvin passed from this life on Tuesday evening, January 16, in Gillette, WY. Grateful for having shared his life are his son and daughter-in-law, Darrel and Bonnie Burke, Isabel, SD, daughter, Lila Locken, Gillette, WY; four grandchildren, Patty and her husband Mark Peacock, Dupree, SD; John Burke, Belle Fourche, SD; Jeri Lynn and her husband Wayne Martinson, Gillette, WY; Allen Locken and his wife Kori, Gillette, WY; seven great-grandchildren, Tyrel, Parker, Kameron, Kendra, Ashton, Maxwell, and Mallory; three sisters, Fern Olson, Aberdeen, SD; Pearl Brown, Coeur D'Alene, ID; and Myrtle Bornong, Kirkland, WA. Alvin delighted in his family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Doris on October 30, 1974; 2 sisters, Edna Burke and Mildred Thoman; and 4 brothers, Clarence, Warren, Clifford, and Marcus Burke; and 2 grandsons. Funeral services for Alvin J. Burke, age 96 of Isabel, will be 10:30 am Saturday, January 20, at Peace Lutheran Church in Isabel. Pastor Christian Sulzle will officiate with burial in Greenhill Cemetery in Lemmon. Serving as casketbearers are Loris Lindskov, Jack Anderson, Stuart Surma, Dean Swift, Dale Young, and Wayne Corcoran. www.evansonjensenfuneralhome.com.
