Description	:	A Service of Remembrance for Marcus L. Burke, age 88, of Morristown will be 11:00am Friday, April 29, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Morristown. Rev Fr Brian Fawcett will officiate with burial in the Morristown Cemetery. Special music will be provided by Connie Maier, organist. All great and great great grandchildren are considered honorary bearers. MARCUS LEE BURKE was born July 22, 1916 at his home in Crookston, MN. He was the sixth of ten children born to William Charles and Alma Pauline (Lee) Burke. In 1918, at the age of two, the Burke Family moved to Gopher, SD where they homesteaded three miles south of Gopher. Marcus attended school in Gopher. They farmed and raised cattle near Gopher for eighteen years. His father died in 1925 when Marcus was nine years of age. At an early age, he began herding sheep and cattle of area farmers and ranchers. In September of 1936, Alma and her five youngest children moved to Morristown. From 1936 to 1941, Marcus worked for the W.P.A. on the construction of the Pudwill Dam east of McIntosh and on fencing of government pastures south of Lemmon. In the spring of 1938, he went to Glad Valley where he worked for his brother Clarence in a gas station, and later worked on a threshing crew and helped area farmers harvest. On February 28, 1942, he was united in marriage to Dorothea Evelyn Ring at Sacred Heart Rectory in Morristown. They began their life together on the farm southeast of Morristown where they farmed and ranched together along with their four daughters, raising sheep, cattle, and wheat. They moved back into Morristown in 1958 and Marcus began working at the elevator in 1960. In 1968, Marcus and Dorothea purchased the business which they operated together in addition to farming. They sold their farming operation in 1974 and the elevator in 1981. Following their retirement, they continued to spend their years together in Morristown. Marcus enjoyed playing baseball and pitching horseshoes in which he played in several state tournaments and won many trophies. He started playing on a baseball team in 1932 for Glad Valley and later for the Morristown and Watauga teams. He also enjoyed playing cards, watching boxing, and attending auction sales. His wife Dorothea passed away on February 22, 2004 at the age of 80 years, 5 months, 21 days. Marcus passed away on Monday, April 25, at McIntosh at the age of 88 years, 7 months, 3 days. Surviving family members include his 4 daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Allan Novak, Hugo, MN; Marlys and Richard Petersen, Bismarck, ND; Donna Mattern, Lorrie and George Ternes, all of McIntosh, SD; 13 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren; 1 brother, Alvin Burke, Isabel, SD; 3 sisters, Myrtle Bornong, Kirkland, WA; Pearl Brown, Couer d'Alene, ID; Fern Olson, Aberdeen, SD; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Dorothea; an infant daughter, Gloria in 1943; one great grandson, Carlos Diaz; three brothers, Clarence, Warren, and Clifford Burke; two sisters, Edna Burke and Mildred Thoman. Visitation will be Thursday, 1:00 to 9:00pm at the Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Lemmon and on Friday one hour prior to services at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Morristown.
