Description	:	Alvin Norman Gimbel was born March 17, 1925 to Emanuel and Ida (Meyer) Gimbel on a farm near Armour, SD. He passed away on Wednesday, September 9, 2020 at the Avera Sister James Care Center at Majestic Bluffs in Yankton. Read More	Alvin Norman Gimbel was born March 17, 1925 to Emanuel and Ida (Meyer) Gimbel on a farm near Armour, SD. He passed away on Wednesday, September 9, 2020 at the Avera Sister James Care Center at Majestic Bluffs in Yankton. Alvin moved to Scotland with his parents where he attended school and worked milking cows. He enlisted in the US Navy on February 10, 1943 at the age of 17. He left the United States on November 15, 1943 on a Dutch ship “Brastag” for Hollandia, New Guinea where he served as a cook, second class for two years. He was honorably discharged on November 13, 1945 at the USN Personnel Separation Center in Minneapolis, MN. He had served in the Navy for two years, nine months and four days. Alvin married Mildred Priebe on August 18, 1945 in Richmond, CA. They were married for 75 years. Alvin worked as a car painter in Sioux City, IA. He owned and operated the Scotland Cafe in Scotland, SD. He did polishing and buffing in Richmond, CA until he came to Springfield and worked for Archie Midkiff at Midkiff Hardware for six years. In November 1964 he bought Clutters Hardware. He changed the name to Al’s Hardware and was the owner for 25 years. Alvin was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church from July 1958 until his death. He was a city councilman in Springfield for 23 years and enjoyed a neat and clean town. Alvin took a liking to woodworking after retiring, making shelves and many other wood items. He enjoyed hunting pheasants and deer, traveling to see family, gardening and sharing the produce with friends and family. Alvin was preceded in death by his brothers: Rueben (Vilva) Gimbel, Reinhold (Eleanor) Gimbel and LeRoy Gimbel; and an infant sister Bernadine Gimbel.
