There will be a prayer service Tuesday at 7 pm with visitation from 5-7 pm and Wednesday from 9-11 am at the funeral home. Al died Saturday, January 28, 2012 at Avera St. Luke's Hospital. Alvin R. Merkel, son of Jacob and Flossie (Stevens) Merkel was born October 26, 1930 in the eastern hills of McIntosh County near Ashley, ND. He attended country school and graduated from Forbes, ND High School with the class of 1948. He then attended Ellendale Normal and Industrial College for one year and received his teacher's certificate. He taught rural school near Forbes for one year. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Miller on July 1, 1949 in Bethlehem Lutheran Church Parsonage in Forbes. In 1951, they moved to Aberdeen where he worked at K.O. Lee for six years and at the United States Post Office for 35 years as a carrier and VOMA. He retired in 1992. In 1973, he and Dorothy built a home at Richmond Lake where they lived for 37 years. He enjoyed his time living at the lake filling his days with yard work, tending to a large garden, and of course fishing. The time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren at the lake and on his pontoon fishing and having fun were the most memorable moments for him, especially when his great-grandson, Brandon was trailing behind him. In 2008, they decided it was time to move into Aberdeen. Alvin visited the YMCA several times a week and put on many miles walking the trails of Aberdeen. He was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church and National Association of Letter Carriers where he had held several offices. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, one son, Ron Merkel of Aberdeen, one daughter, Sheryl Merkel of Kokomo, IN, three sisters, Emma Olek of Fargo, ND, Marion (Mike) Martin of Forbes and Frances Schwan of Anaheim, CA, three grandchildren, Nicolle Merkel, Stephani (Scott) Kringstad and Courtney (Brian) Sparks and five great-grandchildren, Brandon Schweitzer, Ashton and Jayce Lenling, Lexi Horst and Nolan Sparks. His parents, one son, Steve (10-28-2005), eight brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. Honorary Casketbearers will be Al's grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Casketbearers will be Don Miller, Mickey Miller, Brandon Schweitzer, Nairn Hermansen, Wayne Klipfel and Bob Luce. The organist will be Susan Ellingson and the ushers are Russell Brandt and Danny Heinz.
