Steven Merkel, son of Alvin and Dorothy (Miller) Merkel was born Nov. 8, 1952, at Aberdeen. This is where he grew up; graduating with the Class of 1971 from Central High School. He then worked for DeVries Dairy as a route delivery man. In 1984, he moved to Oxnard, Calif., where he worked for Chase Brothers Dairy. He returned to Aberdeen in 1995 to be close to his family and grandchildren. He became employed with Ruckers Candy Distributors and was still working for them at the time of his death. He moved to New Evarts near Glenham in 1999 with Vicki, his fiance. Steve loved to hunt and fish and spent many hours with his friends doing these activities. He collected records and beer cans. Traveling was always relaxing for him and Jamaica was a favorite destination. In New Evarts, he indulged his love of gardening and acquired an assorted menagerie of dog, cats and ducks. He enjoyed the peace of the river and the howl of the coyotes. Survivors include his parents of Aberdeen, his soulmate and fiance, Vicki Thronson of Glenham, one daughter, Nicolle Merkel of Mina, one brother, Ron Merkel of Aberdeen, one sister, Sheryl (Jim) Horst of Warren, Ind., three grandchildren, Brandon, Ashton and Jayce and Kodiak, his dog and faithful companion. His paternal and maternal grandparents preceded him in death. Casketbearers will be Jeff Sahli, Randy Hottman, Dick Fiedler, Jim Kirkgasler, Derrick Herther and Mark Kervin. Carlsen Funeral Home and Crematory of Aberdeen have been entrusted with arrangements. Published in the Aberdeen News on 11/1/2005.
